Prep roundup: Carson falls to Elko

ELKO — Elko High outscored Carson 20-14 in the fourth quarter to grab a 56-48 win Friday night at the Red Lion Invitational at Elko High School.

Carson, 1-1, plays West-Salt Lake City today at 2 p.m.

The game was won at the foul line. Elko went 24-for-33 and Carson went 5-for-10.

“It was a very physical game,” Carson coach Carlos Mendeguia said. “I thought they were just as physical as us if not more.

“We missed a lot of easy shots. We didn’t execute down the stretch.”

Kyle Steele led Carson with 14 points, while Asa Carter and Cameron Price added seven each. Price also had four rebounds. Tez Allen added six points and four rebounds. Jayden DeJoseph finished with five points.

Carson didn’t take good care of the ball, turning it over 24 times.

Douglas beats Reed

RENO — Sparked by its balanced offense, the Douglas High boys basketball team rallied in the fourth quarter to defeat Reed 50-46 Friday afternoon during the 11th annual Wild West Shootout in Reno.

Alex Tessmann and Sam Broersma scored nine points each, while Jace Hart and Connor Lyons added eight points each to lead the way for Douglas (2-2) at Bishop Manogue High School.

The Tigers were coming off back-to-back tournament losses against blue chip opponents — 72-28 on Wednesday against nationally ranked Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) and 75-41 on Thursday against Capital Christian (Sacramento) — and posted a win against Northern Division I foe Reed.

Reed led 19-17 at halftime and 33-32 at the end of three quarters. The Tigers surged out front with their 18-13 run through the final quarter.

Ben Nolting also scored seven points for the Tigers as he shot 5-for-5 from the free throw line. Lyons also shot 4-for-4 from the line and the Tigers shot 13-for-17 as a team.

Dayton falls in tourney

TRUCKEE — Incline bolted to a 17-0 lead and then held off a late Dayton rally en route to an 80-69 win in a loser’s bracket game at the Truckee Tournament.

Dayton fell to 1-3, and will try to end its three-game losing streak today at 10 a.m. against the loser of the White Pine-North Tahoe game.

Defense was again an issue for Dayton.

“We came out in a 2-3, and we were flat,” Dayton coach Jason Santos said. “They were up 17-0 to start the game. We were lackadaisical; no intensity. We woke up in the second, third and fourth quarters. We actually got it to six points and then they hit free throws.”

Jon Joiner led Dayton with 18, Davis Winebarger added 13, Marcos Leon 11 and Ty Pearson chipped in 10.

Virginia City pounds Silver Stage

HAWTHORNE — Clint Hess scored 17 and Colt Hess added 16 to lead the Muckers to an easy 77-42 win at the Serpent Classic on Friday.

Sam McCain added 13 for Tom Mauer’s club, which held Silver Stage to two field goals in the second half.

U. Mine edges Senators

SPARKS — Carson made just one 3-point field goal and shot less than 25 percent from the floor in a 38-32 loss at the High Sierra Winter Classic Friday at Spanish Springs,

Carson, 1-2, plays twice today. The Senators play Palo Verde of Las Vegas at 10:30 a.m. and then return to action at 4:30 against Fernley.

“We were very flat,” Carson coach Nate Tolbert said. “We came out sluggish. I don’t know if it’s the amount of games we play this week (third in four days). They have to figure out a way to get revitalized.

“We were getting open looks. Everything was short. The game went back and forth the whole night. They weren’t that athletic. They were bruisers and we tried to bruise with them.”

Carson didn’t take good control of the ball either, turning it over 24 times.

Dayton gets first win

HAWTHORNE —Angela Sikora scored 27 points and pulled down nine rebounds to lead Dayton to a 49-41 win over Battle Mountain in a consolation game at the Serpent Classic. The win snapped a three-game losing streak.

Christi Ricci added 10 points and three assists, and Elvia Diaz scored seven points and pulled down 10 rebounds.

“Our girls came in ready to play,” said first-year head coach Kelly Frantz. “I am proud how they came in rebounding tough. We took advantage of our offensive opportunities.”

Later on Friday, Dayton lost to Lovelock, 51-26. Dayton lost to Lovelock on Tuesday.

Sikora scored 16 points and pulled down five rebounds. Kristina Mason scored six points.

Lovelock led 19-12 at the half, and then opened up its offense in the second half.

“We looked a little tired and gave up too many outside shots,” Frantz said. “We couldn’t get our offense going or our shots to fall.”

Douglas rolls to win

SPARKS — The Tigers improved to 3-0 with a 46-30 win over Lassen at the High Sierra Winter Classic on Friday.
