ELKO — Carson High opened its 2014-15 season in impressive fashion with a 78-40 win over Spring Creek at the Red Lion Invitational Thursday night.
Carson plays against Elko tonight at 8.
The Senators had five players in double figures — Cameron Price (17), Kyle Steele (16), Jayden DeJoseph (10), Jared Rooker (10) and Asa Carter (10). Tez Allen chipped in six.
Coach Carlos Mendeguia was happy with the win, especially the way his team played in the third quarter when it outscored Spring Creek, 24-5, to take a 67-31 lead after three periods. Carson led 43-26 at the half.
“That was one of the best third quarters we’ve ever played,” Mendeguia said. “We came out with a lot of intensity. We had good ball pressure. We picked them up full court. They had a couple of good guards, and we wanted to keep the ball out of their hands as much as possible.
“A lot of our points came off transition. Asa was all over the place defensively. He made us go.”
Steele drained three 3-pointers, while DeJoseph had two and Greg Wallace one.
Dayton drops tourney opener
TRUCKEE — Davis Winebarger dropped in 20 points, but Dayton still dropped a 69-47 decision to Mesa Verde in the first round of the Truckee Tournament.
Dayton, 1-2, plays Incline today at 3 in a loser’s bracket game.
Winebarger nailed four 3-pointers en route to taking high-point honors. Jon Joiner added 11 and Dallon Mendoza seven for the Dust Devils, who trailed 33-20 at the half.
“We didn’t have a lot of intensity on defense,” Dayton coach Jason Santos said. “They had a couple of pretty athletic posts and a couple of quick guards that we couldn’t handle. We played a 2-3 zone most of the time.”
Virginia City wins
HAWTHORNE — Virginia City opened its boys basketball season with a 41-39 win over Pyramid Lake at the Hawthorne Tournament Thursday night.
Sam McCain led the team with 10 points. Clint Hess added eight and Colt Hess chipped in seven.
The Muckers were slated for another game Thursday night, tipping off at 10:45 p.m.
Douglas loses big again
RENO — Capital Christian of Sacramento knocked off the Tigers, 75-41, Thursday at the Wild West Shootout at Bishop Manogue.
Fernley nips Yerington
YERINGTON — Sam Hammond scored 26 and Bryan Ramirez added 12, but it wasn’t enough as Fernley edged Yerington, 64-59, in a nonleague game on Wednesday night.

Carson pounds Casa Roble
RENO — The Senators evened their record at 1-1 with an easy 38-20 win over Casa Roble in the first round of the High Sierra Classic at Reno High Thursday night.
Carson plays Union Mine tonight at 6 at Spanish Springs.
Maddie Preston and Kayla Aikins led Carson’s offense with seven points apiece. Bri Alvarado had five points, while Teresa Boehmer and Andrea Maffei added four each.
Carson led 29-7 at the half, and things started to get sloppy in the final 16 minutes as Carson went to its bench liberally.
“We started working on things midway through the second half,” CHS coach Nate Tolbert said. “The defense set the tone.
“We played with a lot more confidence than we did against Reno. We weren’t able to get into a rhythm offensively.”
Dayton girls lose twice
HAWTHORNE — Dayton fell to 0-3 after losing twice at the Serpent Classic on Thursday.
The Dust Devils lost 50-16 to White Pine and 59-19 to Lincoln.
Angela Sikora scored a combined 23 points and Elvia Diaz pulled down 15 rebounds in two games.

Dayton drops opener
LOVELOCK — Despite 16 points by Elora Neep, Dayton dropped a 62-24 decision to Lovelock Tuesday night.
Carson girls beat Reno
RENO — Camiell Simpson scored 16 points to lead the Senators past Reno, 34-29, for the second time in three days.
Carson, 2-0, plays Lowry today at 4:30 at Spanish Springs in the second day of the High Sierra Winter Classic.
WRESTLING
Carson hosts tourney
The 17th annual Capitol City Duals takes place Saturday starting at 9 a.m, at Morse Burley Gymnasium.
Carson, North Valleys, McQueen, Reed and Wooster are in one division, and Bishop Manogue, Douglas, Lowry, Reno and Spanish Springs are in the other bracket.
Each team wrestles four duals, and then will cross over to wrestle a team in the other division.
Carson opens against North Valleys, and then faces Wooster, Reed and McQueen. Lowry is the tournament favorite.
