The three-card monte sharp at Salt Lake has had the effrontery to sue the C.P.R.R. for $25,000 damages for putting him off one of its trains for playing his rascally vocation there. In order to make cause for damages, he should prove that if he had been allowed to pursue his travels unmolested, he should have been successful in robbing his fellow passengers of the amount of money named in his complaint.

The future of the mint. President Arthur’s fierce attack upon the standard silver dollar and his recommendation for the immediate stoppage of its coinage has caused no small amount of alarm here which is not confined to those who derive or indirect benefit from the mint, but it is general. The abolishment of the mint would certainly prove a serious backset to Carson.

Old Pioneer Ill. The old-time friends of Jesse Bright will regret to learn that he is seriously ill at his home in this city. Reports this morning were to the effect that he had passed fairly good night.

With a definite schedule ahead of them and a bright future prospects, 14 members of the “A” squad in basketball are settling down to work. Mr. Punches is thinking of installing fan-shapped backboards, but no definite plans have been made.

Radiogram from “Uncle Joe.” Santa Claus Workshop, North Pole. Good news, boys and girls. Right after I sent the last message, the storm blew itself out and Mukluk said he could tell we were close to Santa’s home. Then we ran into a signpost that said “S. Claus - 5 mi.” We were there by noon. (Continued on Wednesday.)
