Prep roundup: CHS quartet wins titles at Lowry

WINNEMUCCA — Brandon Basa (106), Brady O’Keefe (145), Connor Sievers (195) and Brady Rivera (215) walked away with titles at the Cody Louck Invitational Wrestling Tournament Saturday at the Winnemucca Events Center.

Carson finished third as a team. Lowry won the tournament with 264 points followed by Spanish Springs at 214.5 and Carson at 206.

“Spanish Springs had more kids wrestling back than we did,” CHS coach Paul Carter said. “Nobody was going to catch Lowry. I’m kind of disappointed where we ended up. I definitely saw some bright spots, though.”

The performance gives the Senators some momentum heading into this weekend’s prestigious Tournament of Champions at the Reno Events Center this Friday and Saturday.

“It is a very tough tournament,” Carter said. “We have some guys that can do well. We are still working around with our weights. Once we’ve done that, we’ll be pretty solid.”

Basa beat Mason Smith of Fallon by fall in the semifinals, and won 6-1 against Tryston Hutchinson of Middleton-Idaho, while O’Keefe beat Isaac Ruiz of Spanish Springs in the semifinals and then knocked off North Valleys’ Tim Trainor 10-3 in the finals to remain unbeaten this year.

Sievers finished the tourney 5-0 after pinning Ty Arnett of Lovelock in the semis and Kelvin Meza of Lowry in the finals. Rivera is still unbeaten after pinning Elko’s Luis Salazar of Elko and Douglas’ Zach Singer in the finals.

“Brady Rivera is wrestling pretty darn tough,” Carter said. “Sievers is on fire. Hopefully he doesn’t cool off.”

Spencer Rogers took second at 132, beating Yerington’s Cade Draper, 5-4 in the semifinals, and then losing 13-4 to Lowry’s Gabe Molina. Sheldon Miller was pinned by Spanish Springs’ Tyler Barats in the semifinals and then he pinned Fernley’s Tyler Roemer before being pinned in the third-place match. The only other placer was Nolan Shine, who lost two straight by fall before beating Douglas’ Blake Murray 10-2 to finish fifth.

Nathan Mersino (138) went 1-1 on the day, defeating John Martel of Wooster, 4-1, and losing to Spanish Springs’ Blake Boswell, 4-2. Kevin Rusler (182) went 2-1 on the day and finished a match away from placing, while Jake Roman (126) went 1-1. Terin Keller (106), Casey Stevens (120) and Hector Perez (152) were all eliminated after losing their first match of the day.

CHS JV wrestlers win three titles

RENO — Ethan Lepire (106), Kyle Rudy (120) and Kyle McDermott (138) won titles at the McQueen JV Tournament on Saturday.

Lepire went 3-0 with three pins and is now 9-0 overall. Rudy also went 3-0 with three pins. He was down 7-0 in the semifinals and pinned his opponent. McDermott won all three of his matches.

Skylar Duncan (120), Seth Reichelt (145), Alex Honeycutt (170), Michael Freeman (182) and Core Jasper (220) all finished second. Duncan lost to his teammate in the finals, Reichelt and Honeycutt had two pins each.

Jarod Butler (160) and Sam Haight (heavyweight) each placed third. Butler went 2-1 and Haight went 3-1.

VARSITY BOYS BASKETBALL

Muckers win twice, now 7-2

VIRGINIA CITY — Virginia City knocked off Round Mountain and Tonopah to finish 3-1 at its own Comstock Classic.

Late Friday night, VC pounded Round Mountain, 63-31, and on Saturday the Muckers blitzed Tonopah, 40-23.

Clint Hess scored 20 in the win over Round Mountain and added 11 against Tonopah. Colt Hess had seven against Tonopah.

VC returns to action Friday with a home game against Redding Christian.

Douglas falls to Idaho school

MINDEN — Ten different players scored for Post Falls (Idaho) during a 31-point fourth quarter outburst as the Trojans pulled away to their non-league win, 74-41, Saturday afternoon.

Douglas (3-5 overall) only trailed 41-33 after Alex Tessmann sank two free throws with 1:13 left in the third quarter, however, Post Falls (4-0) ran off 13 unanswered points to break the game open.

Michael Johnson led Douglas with 11 points.

The junior guard scored six, including a 3-pointer, while Jace Hart and Tessmann scored on inside shots in the final minute to help stake the Tigers to an 18-14 first-quarter lead.

Junior guard Max McCullough scored a game-high 14 points for Post Falls, including a pair of 3-pointers in the third quarter. Dalton Thompson and Jack Millsap added 11 points each for the Trojans.
