Carson City’s BRIC transitions come quickly next year

Changes at the city’s Business Resource Innovation Center (BRIC) building are under way and will alter uses by the public and business people.

The business branch of the Carson City Library, currently housed at the BRIC, will move next month to the main library at 900 N. Roop St. The BRIC library unit will close on Friday, Jan. 9, 2015, and reopen at the main library on Monday, Jan. 26, 2015.

In addition, part of the Community Development Department will move from the BRIC’s second to the main floor. The building permit and business license center will go on the first floor for improved service, according to Community Development Director Lee Plemel. Plemel and Library Director Sena Lloyd explained the thinking, which includes the move of Michael Salogga, business development director, to the city manager’s office in City Hall.

“With the new technology assets at the main branch,” said Lloyd, “it makes sense to bring the BRIC resources back to the main branch.” Plemel said the move of permit personnel down to the street level “will be a big benefit to local contractors and the community.” He added it “just makes sense” to make the changes as Salogga exits the BRIC to take on additional duties.

Salogga moves to City Hall with an expanded work load, including not only business development but internal city communications oversight and LEAN management efforts on his plate. City Manager Nick Marano said the Salogga move sparked a rethinking of the BRIC building’s utilization at 108 E. Proctor St., with other public uses impacted but still in transition.

For example, conference room use by public groups may require changes because city staff person must be on hand. Groups that now have such sessions scheduled will be contacted to discuss options, such as other city building sites.
