The Fuji Park Pavilion will open this week to help the homeless get through what is expected to be a cold NewYear’s.

City Hall, the Parks and Recreation division and FISH will manage the shelter with FISH staffing and operating the center.

Sheriff Ken Furlong said deaths because of winter storms and exposure to severe cold are not uncommon in western Nevada.

“The most common areas where the deaths occur is in our southern areas of town,” he said.

Furlong said low temperatures this week “could pose a critical risk of life to many people who have no ability to provide their own shelter.”
