Carson wrestlers bring home Placer title

AUBURN, Calif, — Carson High’s wrestling team won five straight duals to claim the Placer Invitational Saturday afternoon.

The tournament title was capped by wins over Reno, 45-30, in the semifinals, and a 47-30 win over Spanish Springs in the championship match.

Carson beat Bradshaw Christian, 84-0, and Anderson, 63-12, in their first two matches. Carson went to 3-0 with a 39-34 win over host Placer, setting the stage for its big wins over the two Northern Nevada powers.

“Beating Spanish Springs in the finals was obviously the highlight,” first-year head coach Paul Carter said. “We had a great tournament. Beating Spanish Springs gives us a boost in terms of confidence. It definitely gives you some confidence heading into regionals.”

What makes the wins even more impressive is that Carson was without Dom Kinder and Connor Sievers. Anthony Estrada went 3-2 with two pins in place of Kinder and Sam Haight went 2-3 in Sievers’ 195-pound spot.

Brandon Basa (106), Austin Martinez (120), Kyle Sharp (132) and Nicholas Lani (138) all went 5-0. Lani had four pins (and a forfeit), while Basa and Martinez had three pins each. Sharp won twice by fall.

Sammy Mercado (113), Brady O’Keefe (145), Nolan Shine (152), Cody Cunningham (170) and Brady Rivera (182, 195) all went 4-1. Shine and Cunningham each recorded three pins, while O’Keefe had two and Rivera one. Rivera was moved up to 195 in the dual against Reno and went up against Sullivan Cauley, who emerged with a 5-2 win.

Corey jasper compiled a 3-2 record at 220. Elijah Fajayan was 2-3 at 160 and Sheldon Miller was 1-3 in the heavyweight slot.

Carson hosts Galena Wednesday at 6 p.m.

• In the JV regional tournament at McQueen, Spencer Rogers (120) was the only Carson champion.

Casey Stevens (106), Johnathan Artz (138), Alex Estrada (145), Victor Freeman (160) and Nick Andreas (170) all finished in second place. Alex Honeycutt was third at 152, while Jake Roman (113) and Seth Reichelt (132) grabbed fourth-place finishes.

JC SOFTBALL

WNC gets swept

HENDERSON —Western Nevada jumped to an early 4-0 lead, but Gulf Coast scored six times in its next two at-bats to knock off the Wildcats 17-8 Saturday afternoon.

WNC made three errors which led to eight earned runs. Reliever Lindsey Ashbaugh suffered the loss.

Katilyn Cavione hit a three-run homer in the first for WNC, which finished with 13 hits. Cara McCarthy, Heather Septon, Cavione and Makenzie Hospadka all had two hits

Earlier in the day, WNC dropped a 13-4 decision to Arizona Western.

Covione was rocked for eight runs and nine hits in two-plus innings. Ashbaugh pitched the final 3.1, allowing four runs and four hits.

McCarthy, Cavione and Madi Gonzalez led the offense with two hits apiece. McCarthy, Meghan Hospodka and Gonzalez drove in a run apiece

JC BASEBALL

WNC falls to 0-2

PHOENIX — Western Nevada fell to 0-2 after dropping a 6-3 decision to South Mountain in a non-league game on Saturday.

The game was tied at 1 entering the bottom of the fourth, but South Point scored once in the fourth and twice in the fifth off starter/loser Christian Stolo to take the lead for good. Stolo yielded four earned runs and six hits in his first start of the season.

WNC managed just four hits off Clay Miller, Chris Plitt and David Renteria. Rayne Raven, Joey Crunkilton, Kody Reynolds and Alex Fife had a hit apiece. Crunkilton and Austin Andrews each had an RBI.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Elko wallops Dayton

DAYTON — The Indians held out-manned Dayton scoreless in the first quarter en route to an easy 43-9 win.

Dayton played with just six players because of an injury to Muranda Fowler and illness that sidelined Lettie Lynch.

Angela Sikora led Dayton with five points.

• In JV girls play, Elko rolled to a 59-15 win. Katie Turner led Dayton with nine points.

Sierra Lutheran wins

Cali Benton scored eight points and pulled down eight rebounds to lead Sierra Lutheran to a 31-24 win over Sage Ridge i n a Division IV basketball game on Saturday. Sierra improved to 9-13 overall.
