2 women arrested on felony drug, child-endangerment counts

Two Carson City women, ages 22 and 21, were arrested Thursday on suspicion of felony counts, including child endangerment. According to arrest reports:

Multiple deputies were in the area searching for a woman who’d run away from one of them. They saw someone matching her description near an apartment on Russell Way and asked its two occupants if the woman had entered. One of them, Catherine Bernadette Shuman, shook her head yes, while the man with her shook his head no.

Deputies found Angolece Rice hiding in the bathroom and detained her. She gave permission for a search of a lockbox with her name on it and a purse containing stolen property. Rice said the property was given to her by another person who wasn’t at the apartment, and that person had told her to “get rid of” it.

A deputy found several antique silver items including combs, a hand mirror and a shoe horn that had been reported stolen several days earlier. Deputies also found a sheet of foil with suspected heroin on the surface, then found a spoon with residue and hypodermic needles in the lockbox.

Shuman said she and the man had allowed Rice, her child and her boyfriend to stay at the apartment, and that they’d used heroin in the room that was intended for her own infant daughter. She said they’d used heroin while caring for the children.

Rice was arrested on suspicion of felony child endangerment, felony possession of stolen property and felony possession of a controlled substance. Total bail was set at $67,500. Shuman was arrested on suspicion of felony child endangerment and felony maintaining a drug house. Total bail was set at $60,000. The man was arrested on suspicion of possession of drug paraphernalia, as well as on an alternative-sentencing warrant. Total bail was set at $4,000.
