Harber pitches WNC to win

DOUGLAS, Ariz — Western Nevada College’s baseball team made it two straight over Cochise with a 6-2 win Saturday afternoon in the final game of a three-game series.

WNC will next play a three-game series against Riverside Thursday at 6 p.m.

Conor Harber worked the first six innings, striking out eight and allowing three hits before giving way to Thomas Kerr and Connor Zwetsch, who gave up both of Cochise’s runs in the bottom of the ninth.

WNC took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when Rayne Raven hit a two-out triple and scored on Andrew Fife’s single. In the eighth, Jake Bennett doubled and scored on Fife’s single to make it 2-0.

The Wildcats pushed across four in the top of the ninth to extend the lead to 6-0.

Bennett and Raven drove in two of the runs, while an error accounted for two scores.

Bennett and Fife led the way with three hits apiece, while Raven added two.

WNC women split

TEMPE, Ariz. — Carlee Beck scattered eight hits and WNC made two fourth-inning runs stand up for a 2-1 win over Scottsdale Community College Saturday afternoon.

The split gives WNC a 3-11 record heading into its Scenic West home opener against Salt Lake Friday at 1 p.m. weather permitting.

The game was scoreless for three innings when WNC scored its only runs on a run-scoring infield out by Megan Hospodka and a double by Jenny Rechel, who went 3-for-3. Andi Lee added two hits for WNC.

Scottsdale scored a run in the fourth, but Beck shut the door the rest of the way.

“She pitched a great game,” coach Leah Wentworth said. “She did a good job of beating a good-hitting team that got 12 hits off us yesterday (Friday).”

In the opening game, Central Arizona scored seven in the fourth and added three in the fifth en route to a 12-1 five-inning win over the Wildcats.

Central had just a 2-1 lead until its two-inning barrage.

WNC collected just one hit, a third-inning single by Heather Septon.

Septon, however, made an error at third that led to several unearned runs. It was WNC’s only error on the day.

Dayton dropped by Fallon

DAYTON — Fallon rolled to a 45-26 win over Dayton on Friday night. Paty Ledezma led Dayton with eight points.
