140 years ago

Starved to Death. While Adoph Goffen was passing down Monroe Street in Eureka he was attracted by the sounds of someone moaning in distress. The sounds came from a small canvas tent on the corner of the Chinese garden.

There he found in a nearly nude state was a celestial, groaning piteously and unable to speak. He covered the man, and went to the County physician, who referred him to the commissioners for a permit to take him to the County hospital. Once the permit was obtained, he returned to find the man who died shortly afterwards. His countrymen had refused to have anything to do with him stating they did not like him. After his death, however, they did bring him a quantity of food for the spirit of the departed to feast upon afterward. The body remains where it lay, but will be buried today by the County.

Information was received in Chico last night that the stage carrying mail and passengers between Oroville and Quincy had been lost, and fears are entertained that the driver and passengers have perished. A relief stage started last Sunday, but the journey has been unsuccessful. It is thought the stage is buried under a snow slide with snow on the big summit at ten feet deep -- Butte Record.

100 years ago

The weather being the chief topic of discussion at this time, read the following from Prof. Foster of Washington, and find no fault with what has transpired thus far: The storms of 1914 are coming and they will be the most dangerous within memory of those now living. They will begin in a small way and be a little rough by February 27. Near March 9 the force will gather from that time till May 10th, when one of the greatest storms of modern times will be felt.

Nevada has 2,310 persons on its payrolls during 1943. During the last year those employees paid to the federal government $181,934.02 in victory and withholding taxes. Nevada’s department of highways had the largest number of persons on its payrolls with 1,014 last year.

Hot lunch menu for the week. Monday — Beef chow mein, green beans, peanut butter sandwiches, peaches, milk. Tuesday — Chilibeans, vegetable salad, hot buttered cornbread, grapes, milk. Wednesday — Mashed potatoes, creamed tuna, carrot stix, bread and butter, fruit, milk. Thursday — Toasted meat and cheese sandwiches, lima beans, celery stix, apple crisp, milk. Friday — Macaroni and tomatoes, buttered corn, tuna and egg sandwiches, fruit gelatin, milk.

Nevada’s casinos won $692.3 million during the final three months from unlucky gamblers, a 15.5 percent increase over the previous year.
