Prep Roundup: Dayton wins at Truckee

TRUCKEE — Dayton’s second option turned out to be the right one Tuesday night.

After allowing host Truckee to come back from 12-point fourth-quarter deficit to knot the score at 41-all, Dayton senior Steve Thompson fired a deep, buzzer-beating 3-pointer with two defenders in his face that found nothing but the bottom of the net.

Dayton players rushed onto the court in celebration, having escaped with a 44-41 Division I-A win.

“Coach drew up a play, but there was not enough time, so I just tried to be aggressive and make something happen,” said Thompson, who finished with 12 points.

According to Dayton coach Jason Santos, the final play, with only 3 seconds to execute, was intended for the post. But it wasn’t there, forcing the Dust Devils to kick it out to Thompson near the top of the key. Thompson took care of the rest.

“We’ll take it,” Santos said. “He (Thompson) is real aggressive on offense. We knew we had to get it to him as the secondary option.”

While the senior captain hit the most clutch shot of the game, forward Bernardo Macias did most of the damage throughout the contest. He finished with 18 points and was instrumental in helping the Dust Devils (6-9) build a big early lead that lasted until midway through the fourth quarter.

Using an aggressive full-court press, the Wolverines (2-13) scored 11 unanswered points to get back in the game after trailing 40-28.

Truckee junior Ryan Schildge scored seven of his 13 points in a three-minute span to help close the gap, including the tying basket on a baseline jumper with 25 seconds remaining.

Damonte 58, Douglas 47

Damonte came from behind, thanks to an 18-5 run through the third quarter to knock off the Tigers, according to MaxPreps. Douglas led 27-23 at halftime. Damonte Ranch is now 10-5 in league. Douglas is 8-7 and 12-10 overall.

VARSITY GIRLS

Truckee 38, Dayton 33

TRUCKEE — The Dayton girls played a strong second half against host Truckee only to fall a few buckets short, 38-33.

Senior center Taylor Ingersoll scored nearly at will in the second half to help bring the Dust Devils (2-13) back from a 15-point hole early in the third quarter. She finished with a game-high 16 points, with 14 of them coming after the half.

“She can be a game-changer for us when she decides to be,” said Dayton coach Benjamin Halvorson.

Kaylee Neill led the Wolverines (7-8) with nine points.

Damonte 44, Douglas 40

Damonte is now 8-7 in league. Douglas is 11-4 (18-8 overall).

JV BOYS

Carson 78, Wooster 29

Gurpreet Badhan scored 15 points as Carson cruised. Kyle Krebs (14 points), Greg Wallace (12), Eddie Durate (11) and Cody Azevedo (10) all scored in double figures for the Senators. Carson is 21-2 overall and 15-0 in league.

JV GIRLS

Carson 41, Wooster 34

RENO – The Senators improved to 20-1 with their win over the Colts. Brianna Alvarado led the way with 17 and Melissa Glanzmann added 10.

Truckee 36, Dayton 14

Paty Ledezma led the Dust Devils with eight points in the loss.

FROSH BOYS

Truckee 32, Dayton 26

The Dayton Freshman Boys lost a hard fought game to Truckee on Tuesday. Carson Crosby led Dayton with 10 points. Weston Hill added eight points in the fourth quarter to keep the Dust Devils close. Dayton will host Fernley on Friday in the last game of the year.

FROSH GIRLS

Carson 50, Wooster 8

Josie Share led the team with 15 points as Carson cruised. Haydyn thom added 10 points and Sophia Ruedy chipped in eight. Carson is now 21-1 on the season. The Senators host Douglas at 7 p.m. Friday in the season finale.
