The Chinese New Year Festivities are sustained with a fervor quite interesting though monotonous. The beating of the holiday Mongolian gongs are simultaneously responsive to the explosion of the Chinese firecracker and the vast expenditure of gold-freckled, ochre-colored paper. It will be the greater part of a week before this carnival of burning paper and gum Arabacked hair subsides. Up over William’s store on the second story, there is a band of celestial musicians hard at work on kettle and catgut and brazen horn. They will not let until the week is out.

130 years ago

The end of Tewfik Bey and his band at Sinkat was truly heroic. The garrison, containing but 600 men, has hemmed in by the rebels and its supplies cut off. They finally destroyed all military stores, exploded the magazine and left with as much as each man could carry. They were surrounded by ten times their number being held for an hour at standstill. It has caused sorrow among Englishmen over the massacre.

100 years ago

About 10:20 this morning, a noticeable shock of earthquake struck Carson, but did no damage. The movement from east to west lasted about eight seconds. In Reno it cracked walls and broke windows. At Virginia the shock was severe, but did no damage.

What is believed to be the complete record of the homes of Abraham Lincoln has been compiled by Dr. Louis A. Warren, who has devoted his life to Lincoln research. All together, Lincoln lived in 16 homes.

Nevada Miss Sonnia Pederson of Carson is a picture of beauty and brains. The 18-year-old Carson High School honor roll student was crowned Nevada Junior Miss Saturday.

30 years ago

Kathy Freeman, a nurse at Carson-Tahoe Hospital, has retired for the second time at 75. Freeman cared for her husband in 1942 when he was dying and was exposed to the profession by the nurse who helped her. She has cared for others since.
