Prep Roundup: 7 wrestlers in regional semis

Carson’s Brandon Basa (106 pounds), Sammy Mercado (113 pounds), Kyle Sharp (132 pounds), Nicholas Lani (138 pounds), Brady O’Keefe (145 pounds), Nolan Shine (152 pounds) and Brady Rivera (182 pounds) all are in the Division 1 Northern Wrestling regional semifinals after Friday’s action.

Carson sits in third with 59 points, tied with Reed, after the first day. Action resumes at 10 a.m. today at Reno High School.

Coach Paul Carter wasn’t thrilled with Friday’s results, but remained optimistic that with a solid day on the mat, the Senators could catch Spanish Springs (77 points) and McQueen (67).

“We are in third,” Carter said. “But we are not out of it.”

Carter said the key for the Senators is to match the number of finalists Spanish Springs has.

“If we can match them, it will be a tight, tight race,” he said.

Austin Martinez and Spencer Rogers are both still alive for Carson at 120. Martinez went 1-1, Rogers went 2-1.

At 126, Dom Kinder is alive after going 2-1. Kinder was pinned in his first match by McQueen’s Alberto Nava.

Teammate Anthony Estrada is still alive, also at 126, after going 2-1.

Carter said Kinder’s loss was “tough to swallow.” Kinder a state qualifier last year, bounced back with two first-round pins.

The first-year coach said that was the first time Carson had seen McQueen wrestlers this year.

“He (Kinder) came back,” Carter said. “We expect big things out of him (today).

Cody Cunningham, at 170 pounds, is 1-1 and still alive. Cunningham lost his first match to Terry Mason from Reno. Carter said that Mason was a tough draw for Cunningham. He said Cunningham wrestled a tough match before falling to Mason, who the coach said was a likely state qualifier.

Carson’s Connor Sievers (195 pounds), Sheldon Miller (220) and Corey Jasper (heavyweight) all are 0-1 on the tournament, but are still alive.

Carter said the Senators need points out of those weight classes.

BASKETBALL

VARSITY GIRLS

Fernley 50, Dayton 24

Dayton ended its season with a loss to Fernley on Friday night.

Taylor Ingersoll led the team with six points, Christi Ricci added four.

Dayton coach Ben Halverson credited Fernley with tough defense against Angela Sikora. Sikora was held to four points. Dayton finishes 2-10 overall and 2-14 in league.

JV BOYS

Carson 36, Douglas 34

Greg Wallace and Tez Allen scored eight points each as Carson finished league play with a 16-0 record on Friday. Jace Keema scored seven points for the 22-2 Senators.

JV GIRLS

Douglas 38, Carson 36

MINDEN — Taylor Weddell scored 10 and Christine Boling added eight, but Douglas snapped a 36-all tie in the final half minute to win. Melissa Glanzmann added five points for Carson.

FROSH BOYS

Carson 41, Douglas 31

Michael Mendoza led Carson with 13 points and five rebounds in the Senators’ win on Friday. Carson finished the season at 21-5 with a 13-3 record in league.

Fernley 49, Dayton 45

Carson Crosby led all scorers with a season-high 27 points as Dayton fell to Fernley on Friday. Jorddy Diaz also scored a season-high eight points. Jason Sanborn complemented his strong defense with six points for the Dust Devils.

FROSH GIRLS

Douglas 27, Carson 23

The Senators closed the season at 21-2 after a close loss to the Tigers. Josie Share had 10 for CHS and Anya Woodbury added nine.

JUNIOR COLLEGE

Softball: WNC drops 2

The Western Nevada College softball team dropped its first two home games of the year on Friday

WNC lost 14-5 and 7-5 to Salt Lake Community College.

In the opener, coach Leah Wentworth said the Bruins took advantage of WNC’s mistakes.

The Bruins took an early lead, scoring three in the top of the first inning and five in the second. WNC cut the lead to 8-2. The teams traded runs in the third, WNC responding on a solo homer by Meghan Hospodka. Salt Lake added three in the fourth and two in the fifth.

Meghan Hospodka and Jenny Rechel had two hits apiece for WNC.

Lindsey Ashbaugh took the loss for the Wildcats.

“We need to do a better job of not giving extra bases,” Wentworth said. “We’re making some mental mistakes that I know we can iron out. We’ve seen two tough teams right at the start of our conference season, but I know we can compete if we play solid.”

In the second game, the Wildcats played Salt Lake even until the seventh.

WNC used a big sixth inning to tie the game. Rechel, Gonzales and Katelyn Bomar all singled to load the bases for WNC. Ashbaugh scored Rechel with a single, and Makenzie Hospodka doubled, scoring the runners and knotting the score at 5-5.

In the final inning, the Bruins brought in two, and allowed nothing more from the Wildcats. Carlee Beck took the loss for the Wildcats.

Makenzie Hospodka, Meghan Hospodka, Rechel and Gonzales all had two hits for WNC (3-12).

Games continue at noon and 2 p.m. today at Edmonds Sports Complex.

Baseball: WNC falls to Riverside

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — WNC dropped a 4-3 decision when Riverside tied the game in the 8th and scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth Friday.

WNC had a 2-0 lead, but Riverside scored in the fifth and sixth to tie the game. WNC went ahead in the eighth, before Riverside rallied.

Conor Harber had two hits in the Wildcats’ seven-hit attack.

Jeremy Alderman took the loss in relief of Christian Stolo. Alderman gave up two hits and two runs, one earned, in three-plus innings of work. Stolo gave up two runs, one earned, in 5.1 innings pitched.

WNC, 6-3, continues the series today.
