140 years ago

We dropped in on the boys at work cleaning up Moore & Parker’s Hall after last night’s dance. They had taken down the canvas and were sweeping it off. The Swift Engine in the magnificent array stood by the door against the east wall with pictures and all sorts of emblematic salamander regalia; the music stand placed against the west wall covered with the Stars and Stripes while banners, fireman and otherwise, were pendant from the roof above. When the gas was turned on and the light beamed in, the old time honored hall looked grand and charming indeed. We will say that the ball was a success.

100 years ago

George Subich of Tonopah hired a substitute to represent him in the Balkan war. The substitute went, did his duty in the army and came back with a wife. Now Subich is suing the substitute for $150 he gave him to fight the Turks and save his own hide.

70 years ago

The annual George Washington Silver Tea given by the ladies of the Federated Church Society was held yesterday with more than 70 in attendance. Upon entering, guests viewed a decorative tea table presided over by Mrs. William Good and Mrs. E.A. Ducker, dressed in original Martha Washington colonial attire. The table itself was arranged with a large snowman surrounded by cherries and trees. Mrs. S. Shutz, accompanied by Mrs. A.G. Shriver, sang two Stephen Foster numbers.

50 years ago

The Carson High School chapter of the Future Homemakers of America will hold a fashion show for invited guests at the high school. Shown in the picture are models Marguerite Fothergill, Margaret Edmundson, Abby Cordain, Martha Edmundson, Linda Kellogg, Carol Sanchez, Joyce Steele, Renee Omen and Linda Enloe.

Nevada Appeal columnist Chris Schaller was reported in serious condition this morning at Washoe Medical center in Reno. He is in intensive care and breathing with the help of a respirator.

130 years ago

Some lunatic has introduced a bill into the Iowa Legislature to prevent the use of dogs in hunting birds.

Trent Dolan is the son of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
