Carson wrestlers demolish field in Livermore

LIVERMORE, Calif. — Carson High’s wrestling team, led by individual champs Brady O’Keefe (145) and Kyle Sharp (132), won the Granada Mat Classic Saturday in impressive fashion.

Carson finished with 235 points, well ahead of Freedom’s second-place total of 141.5. Benicia was third at 140 and Rodriguez was fourth at 133.5. Armijo rounded out the top five with 117. It’s the second time in three years that Carson has won the tournament.

“I’m very pleased,” first-year head coach Paul Carter said. “We started the day with a flawless first round. We won all 13 matches. That was impressive. We showed a lot of heart, especially Cody Cunningham. He was down in one of his matches heading into the final seconds and won. We showed a lot of heart and desire.

“Brady O’Keefe was phenomenal. He pinned his first three opponents and then beat his guy by 15 points in the finals. He was the most outstanding wrestler in the tournament.

Kyle has won his weight class here three straight years. He was very impressive. I hope he stays at 132, but I don’t know what he’s thinking. He’s strong and healthy and wrestling well.”

Brandon Basa (106) went 4-1 and finished third; Sammy Mercado (113) went 3-1 and lost in the finals; Spencer Rogers (120) went 1-2; Alex Estrada (126) went 2-2; Nicholas Lani (138) went 3-1 and finished second; Nolan Shine (152) went 3-1 and finished third; Elijah Fajayan (160) went 3-2 and finished eighth; Cunningham (170) went 4-1 and took second; Brady Rivera (182) went 3-1 and finished second; Connor Sievers (195) went 2-2 and Sheldon Miller (220) went 3-2 and took fifth.

JV WRESTLING

Carson JV 9th at varsity event

SPARKS — Carson High’s JV wrestling squad placed ninth out of 20 teams at the Sparks Invitational at Sparks High School on Saturday.

Dom Kinder placed second in the 132-pound division, while Kellen McDermott (126) and Casey Stevens (106) each placed fourth. Alex Honeycutt (152). Corey Jasper (220) and Kevin Rusler (182) all finished sixth.

VARSITY BOYS

Douglas 49, Fallon 41

MINDEN —Austin Evans scored 9 of his 11 points in the fourth quarter on Saturday to help lead the Douglas High boys basketball team to a come-from-behind 49-41 win at home against Fallon.

Fallon (3-5, 2-1) held a 31-27 lead at the end of three quarters, however, Douglas (6-5, 2-2) scored 11 unanswered points to start the fourth and take charge. Pat Johnson hit a pair of free throws to put the Tigers on top, 33-31, and then Evans knocked down a 3-pointer to supply some breathing room.

James Herrick and Johnson scored 8 points each for the Tigers. Jeff Evett led all scorers for the Greenwave with 17 points.

Elko 63, Dayton 38

ELKO — The Indians dominated the final three quarters en route to an easy win on Saturday.

The Indians led 14-13 after one and took a 27-20 lead at the half.

“We had a meltdown late in the first half, and in the second half we couldn’t handle their pressure,” Dayton coach Jason Santos said. “They shoot the ball well. They do everything well.”

Bernardo Macias led Dayton with 15 points, while Austin Fletcher added nine and Steve Thompson six.

Dayton hosts South Tahoe at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

VARSITY GIRLS

Douglas 60, Fallon 31

MINDEN — Leonna Mortimer and Katie McCullough combined to ignite a 21-0 run to start the third quarter put the Douglas High girls basketball team in charge Saturday on its way to a 60-31 non-league victory against Fallon.

Douglas (11-4 overall, 4-0 league) extended its 24-19 halftime lead to 45-19 with 3:35 left in the third quarter and never looked back. Mortimer had eight points and four assists while McCullough had six points and two assists during the outburst.

Mortimer finished with a game-high 18 points and McCullough 16. Jessie Jim also contributed 9, including one 3-pointer.

Meg McCormick led Fallon with 11 points.

Douglas was coming off a 55-14 Sierra League win at Wooster on Friday.

Elko 55, Dayton 42

ELKO — The Dust Devils were competitive with Elko throughout the game, but fell short against the Indians.

Dayton fell to 0-4 in league and 0-8 overall. The Dust Devils play South Tahoe at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday night.

The difference in the game came in the third quarter when Elko outscored Dayton, 23-2.

Angela Sikora led Dayton with 20 points, while Cheyanne Strong and Lettie Lynch added seven apiece.

S. Lutheran 27, Sage Ridge 18

RENO — Sierra Lutheran outscored Sage Ridge 19-5 in the final quarter to grab a come-from-behind win Saturday.

The win evens Sierra Lutheran’s record to 6-6. Amy Westre led Sierra with 12 points and six rebounds.

Elko 38, Dayton 13

ELKO — The Dust Devils, led by April Goodale’s five points, fell to 1-2 on the season after a tough loss to the Indians.

Elko 53, Dayton 32

ELKO — Spenser Underwood and Blake Fletcher scored eight points apiece in the loss, while Jason Sanborn tallied six.
