St. Peters: The Episcopal Church is getting a lighter coat of paint. It will seem less like a diluted brown stone edifice. The work goes bravely on inside. The choir gallery has been remodeled into a balcony. A stained glass window will be placed in the back of the chancel, and the bell will be fixed so that it won’t give the congregation a headache.

San Francisco: Cupid is rarely caught by the police — A young lady dressed as Cupid in San Francisco, drunk at a masquerade ball, was lodged in the city prison with her bow, arrow, and one wing.

120 Years Ago

Young teachers: The following young ladies are to take an examination for first grade teachers: Maggie and Mamie Hickey, Ollie Longabough, Josie Kelly, Josie Roberts, and Katie McCarty. (Josie Roberts was from the Foreman-Roberts House. Her sister, Mary Roberts, was a teacher also.) The highest average of 94 was reached by Miss Mamie Hickey with Miss Jo Roberts a close second.

The epidemic of influenza reached its high peak last week according to Dr. James Thom. Fourteen cases were reported.

U.S. District Judge William G. East ordered a psychiatric examination of one of the accused kidnappers of Frank Sinatra Jr. Joseph Clyde Amsler, a former professional boxer, was deemed mentally incompetent.

30 Years Ago (1984)

Where is big brother: George Orwell wrote the book “1984” — in 1949. According to a Harris poll, 69 percent of respondents believe the kin of society depicted in “1984” is “somewhat close.” David Goodman of Culver City, Calif., said that more than 100 of Orwell’s 137 predictions have come true — some of them include two-way television, artificial insemination, and new forms of psychological torture.
