Gov. Brian Sandoval honored “Bud” Southard as Nevada’s Veteran of the Month for December.
Southard is a member of multiple veteran organizations, including the Navy League, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Fleet Reserve Association. Much of his work has been focused on assistance to active military personnel and their families. He heads the Navy League Scholarship Committee and helped establish a scholarship in honor of Pearl Harbor survivor Sen. Lawrence E. Jacobsen that is presented each year to a Marine for his or her academic participation.
“There have been a lot of things that have all combined for why I’m receiving credit for this work, but it’s with the help of other people,” Southard said. “A lot of this would have never happened had it not been for the platform that the Navy Leagues gives me. I’m just a face in the crowd out there, and this plaque belongs to everyone for their support of these organizations.”
The Veteran of the Month program is managed by the Nevada Department of Veterans Services under the direction of Director Katherine Miller. Board members of the Veterans Services Commission review nominations and choose a recipient. To submit a nomination for consideration, download guidelines and an application at www.veterans.nv.gov and send it to the Nevada Division of Veterans Services in Reno.
