Suburbs: In Carson the suburbs are growing with neat and commodious cottages. North of the Railroad Car Shops, new dwellings sprinkle the landscape. On each end of the Plaza on the plain north and south of the Acid Factory, they are thicker yet. Now there are well-watered and handsome lots that skirt Warm Springs Road. Messrs. Bradley and Johnson have completed improvements on that road and set out their double row of shade trees on each side ...

Chinese funeral, lying in state (Part 2): The dead man was laid out in a black velvet coffin under a muslin canopy. An ordinary red brick with his name carved in Chinese lay at his side. At his feet was a table laden with odd delicacies — turnips carved in fantastic shapes painted red and blue, fried potatoes with the edges gilded, white and green sausages, goat and pig roasted whole.
