FERNLEY — Carson High’s wrestling team, despite two wrestlers failing to make weight on Saturday morning, finished third at the Fernley Tournament.
Lowry won with 263.5 followed by Spanish Springs at 245 and Carson at 220.5. Thirty-one teams were entered in the event.
Sammy Mercado (113) and Austin Martinez (120) both failed to make weight, costing Carson valuable team points. Mercado was 2-0 on Friday and Martinez was 2-1. Mercado still finished fifth.
“I thought we wrestled fairly well considering some of the variable like guys not making weight,” coach Paul Carter said. “I’m not satisfied where we finished and I don’t think the kids are.”
Carson had no champs, but Nicholas Lani (138, 4-1), Brady O’Keefe (145, 4-1), Kyle Sharp (132, 3-1) and Brady Rivera (182, 4-1) all finished second. O’Keefe lost in overtime. Brandon Basa (103), Nolan Shine (152) and Cody Cunningham (170) all finished third. Shine had the toughest road, wrestling six times in two days, Connor Sievers (195) and Spencer Rogers (120) were fifth, and Dominic Kinder, who won his first three matches, was sixth at 126.
Casey Stevens was 2-2 at 106, Anthony Estrada was 4-2 at 132, Johnathan Artz was 2-2 at 138, Victor Freeman was 2-2 at 160 and Sam Haight was 2-2 at 195. Jake Roman (113), Garrett McDermott (132), Sheldon Miller (220), Elijah Fajayan (160), Seth Reichelt (132), Alex Estrada (138) and Alex Honeycutt (152) all won one match.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Dayton 55, Sparks 54
SPARKS — Hours after losing 66-30 to Lowry, the Dust Devils bounced back to grab a thrilling win over the Railroaders to earn their 11th win of the season. No other information was provided.
On Friday, Lowry rolled to a 33-18 lead and coasted the rest of the way. Austin Fletcher scored 11 to lead Dayton while Jon Joyner added five. Josh Watterson led Lowry with 16 points and Delanie Black added 11.
In freshman boys action, Jason Sanborn scored six points and pulled down nine rebounds in a 42-24 loss to Sparks. Carson Crosby added five points.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Dayton 52, Sparks 31
SPARKS — The Dust Devils placed three players in double figures en route to an easy win over the Railroaders.
Angela Sikora led the way with 15 followed by Cheyanne Strong with 13 and Taylor Ingersoll with 10.
“I’m super happy coming away with our second win,” said DH coach Ben Halverson. “What really made the difference was a commitment to rebounding. Against Lowry we were held to 14 total.”
Dayton is 2-12 overall and 2-8 in league.
In JV action, Dayton’s Madi Reid scored late in the game to give Dayton a 16-15 win over Sparks. Paty Ledezma led Dayton with eight points.
In freshman action, six players scored points in Dayton’s 26-22 win over Sparks.
Coleville 27, S. Lutheran 26
MINDEN — Coleville outscored the Falcons 8-6 in the final quarter to emerge with the win.
Cali Benton led the Falcons with 12 points and eight rebounds, while Amy Westre pulled down eight rebounds.
