Toll road: Mr. C. W. Lane of the Winston Exchange Chop-House, having business in Virginia, hired a conveyance here, and took his friend Frank Costello for a driver. He went by way of the Devil’s Gate toll road and paid his toll. He got no ticket in return. He passed on through Devil’s Gate without stopping and went on to Gold Hill. He and his companion found themselves under arrest for running the tollgate. The majesty of a sagebrush turnpike must be vindicated. Lane was tried, and they acquitted him.

Taste of Wild West: Carson City’s Rendezvous, planned over the Memorial Day weekend, is based on a type of historic caper and features Scout Kit Carson. At the mountains men’s urging, everyone sang the rendezvous song:

“Goin’ down to Carson town as early as the dew,

Off the mountain winter to Kit Carson’s Rendezvous.

Gonna drink and eat and sing,

Laugh and dance and have a fling,

Stomp and shout and raise some hell at Carson’s Rendezvous.”
