Kalley finishes 2nd in age group at Intermountain event

Ewan Kalley, 7, earned overall high point runner-up in the 8-and-under age group at the Intermountain Classic held over Memorial Day weekend at the Carson Aquatic Center.

Kalley was second in the 200 freestyle, third in the 50 butterfly and 100 backstroke, fifth in the 100 free, sixth in the 50 back, seventh in the 50 free and eighth in the 50 breaststroke. He also swam a leg on a third-place relay team with Jacob Xie, Jonah Moniz and Aaron Ramirez.

The Carson quartet of Gillian Mandel, Camryn Allen, Madeline Carine and Ashley Meyer were second in the 13-and-over 200 free relay. Reece Canfield, Jay Session, Bryan Remick and Brett Kolb were third in the 13-and-over 200 free relay and Cynthia Crittenden, Alexandra Preez-Rojas, Alexis Humphrey and Bricole Burns were third in the 12-and-under 200 free relay.

Brett Kolb, 14, won the 1500 free in 19:33, was sixth in the 800 free, and 14th in the 100 back and 400 free. Xie was third in the 200 free, fifth in the 50 breaststroke, 100 breaststroke and 100 back, eighth in the 50 back and ninth in the 50 free.

Free tennis clinic set for Centennial Park

Carson City is offering free tennis instruction for children 8 years old and older sponsored by Carson Tennis Club and the Tahoe Tennis Academy.

Veteran instructors Justin Clark and Diane Baker Roberts will lead youngsters through a variety of drills that are designed to introduce them to the sport as well as refine skills of those who are more experienced.

There will be a limited number of rackets available for those who need one. Come dressed to play – which means athletic wear and non-marking shoes. No sandals please.

Be sure to bring water and sunscreen.

The clinic is June 7 from noon to 2 p.m. at Centennial Park Tennis Facility. Arrive 15 minutes before the start time. This is open to all youth in Carson City, Dayton and the surrounding Carson Valley area.

Pizza will be delivered courtesy of Little Cesar’s and Tahoe Tennis Academy/Carson Tennis Club.

Date for CHS v-ball camp, tourney set

Carson High is putting on a volleyball camp Aug. 13-14.

The cost is $80 which covers camp fee, t-shirt and entry into the doubles tournament which starts Aug. 15.

Tryouts for the 2014 team start Aug. 16 from 7 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m.

Ladies’ handgun classes start tonight at Cabela’s

The next class in introduction to handguns for women is tonight at 6:30 p.m. at Cabela’s in Reno.

The 90-minute classes are held in the conference room past the Big Horn Grill and are free of charge. The classes cover firearms safety, how to select a handgun, the differences in pistols and revolvers, how to choose ammunition and accessories and much more.

The classes are held the first Wednesday of each month.

McKnight, Powell win in best ball

JoAnne McKnight and Joyce Powell shot a 58 to win the best-ball crown for women at Thunder Canyon Country Club on May 30. LeAnne Crowell and Sue Camp were a stroke back at 59.

The teams of Jack Bonar and Mike McGee and Mike Bennert and Leland Sullivan shot 60s to tie for the men’s top spot.
