Proscenium Players holds membership meeting

Proscenium Players, Inc. will hold its annual membership meeting and election of board members from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Plan: b Microlounge, located inside Sassafras, 318 N. Carson St.

The group’s board needs to fill officer positions or positions that reach out to a new generation of Proscenium Players.

The board consists of seven officer positions — president, vice president, secretary, treasurer and three members-at-large. All terms are for one year beginning on July 1 and ending on June 30, 2015. Persons interested in serving as president of the board must have previously served on the Proscenium Players, Inc. Board as an elected officer.

Nominations at the meeting will only be accepted for positions in which no one else has submitted for before the June 18 deadline.

Grant awarded to language & literacy nonprofit

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation awarded ESL In-Home Program of Northern Nevada a $4,000 grant to support adult and family English language and literacy.

Since its inception in 1993, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation has awarded more than $92 million in grants to nonprofit organizations, helping more than five million individuals take their first steps toward literacy or continued education.

The ESL In-Home Program of Northern Nevada serves five counties in Northern Nevada with English language and literacy programs for low-income, non-English-speaking adults. The nonprofit is a member of the National Literacy Council. It serves more than 400 learners annually.

Comment sought on proposed energy rate increases

The Public Utilities Commission of Nevada will hold a consumer session to hear public comment about NV Energy’s application to adjust customer rates at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Hearing Room A at Public Utilities Commission of Nevada, 1150 E. William St.

The application seeks approval of fuel and purchased power expenses for 2013 and to reset several renewable energy and energy efficiency program rates. The application also proposes to refund a portion of energy efficiency revenue collected in 2013 and suspend collection of some energy efficiency costs during the second half of 2014.

For electric customers in Northern Nevada, NV Energy proposes to decrease rates an estimated 11.78 percent across all rate classes. The average monthly residential bill is estimated to decrease $5.64, or 6.04 percent. For gas customers in Reno and Sparks, NV Energy proposes to decrease rates an estimated 0.12 percent across all rate classes. The average monthly residential bill is estimated to decrease by 8 cents, or 0.16 percent.

For electric customers in Southern Nevada, NV Energy proposes to increase rates an estimated 0.39 percent across all rate classes. The average monthly residential bill is estimated to increase 41 cents, or 0.27 percent.

Storytellers bring Gold Rush songs and tales

Award-winning storytellers B.Z. Smith and Peg Reza will present “Traveling Up Gold Mountain: Songs & Stories of California’s Gold Rush” at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park in Minden.

The presentation offers songs of the Gold Rush era and stories of Mother Lode heritage. It will cover inhabitants of the region more than 150 years, ago, how gold became trapped in the Sierra Nevada and how miners struggled to find it.

The free, hour-long, outdoor presentation begins at 6 p.m. Seating will be available, but visitors are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs. Soft drinks and water will be available for purchase, or visitors can bring a picnic.

B.Z. Smith, a retired teacher and library outreach specialist, has been a professional storyteller for more than 38 years. She has earned several major awards for her work, including a Parents’ Choice Gold Award for her first recording, a Showcase Teller for the 2005 National Storytelling Festival, and a National Storytelling Network Oracle Award for Service and Leadership.

Peg Reza has performed and taught music throughout the West. A songwriter and musical arranger, she is the director of Columbia State Historic Park’s Blue Shoes Auxiliary Ukulele Orchestra and a teacher at many ukulele conferences.
