Hebrews 11:1 helps us to understand faith

There are many wonderful things in the world today that are such a mystery to me. One of them is a CD. I don’t understand CDs, and I don’t know how they work; I can’t see the songs in them but when I put a CD into my CD player, I hear music.

Cell phones are another mystery. I think cell phones are pretty amazing. I can go to the internet or talk to someone more than 100 miles away and the thing doesn’t have a cord. I don’t understand how it works, but it does.

Lastly, I am mystified by pain relievers like Tylenol. How can taking a pill ease a body? I can take this pill and my aches and pains will go away; my back feels better and my headache goes away. How does it do that? I don’t know. I don’t understand it, and I certainly couldn’t make one, but it works.

Now these are all man-made things, and someone somewhere understands all this. Someone somewhere understood it enough to make these which were once fantastic ideas into something that we use, and though we don’t understand how they work, we take it for granted they do work and they have become useful.

Faith is another wonder. In the Bible, Hebrews 11:1 tells us that, “Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.” Faith is visualizing the future beforehand. It’s dreaming about what can “Be.”

All of these inventions mentioned earlier were thoughts at one time in someone’s head and they dared to make it. They didn’t know how at first, but they believed enough to give it a try. I do not believe these thoughts were random, but were God-given thoughts.

So what is faith? Faith is believing when we don’t understand how it can be done. Some things have to be believed before they can be seen. It’s amazing what we see when we look through the eyes of faith. We see God; we see him at work, and we see his hand in our lives. When we forget to trust, or lose faith, it’s hard to see; however, as we walk by faith and trust in God, though we cannot see him, he sends us peace and assurance that brings a smile to our hearts. He reminds us we have a value to him and that this value is priceless.
