Jim Collins and Rich Wilde parlayed wins in two of the 9-hole formats to win the overall title in the Dayton Valley Palmer Club Member-Member tournament played June 14-15. The two-day, two-man, net 36-hole event was contested with four different 9-hole formats of Chapman Scotch, best ball, scramble and total score.
Andrew Palmer and Jason Clark finished second in the overall with John Cowee and John Peters in third. Also in the money overall were Jeff Miller and John Heibel fourth, Don Robertson and Gary Leiper fifth and Alex Gentry and Don Harn in sixth.
Collins and Wilde cruised to a 3-stroke victory in the Best Ball format over the teams of Palmer and Clark and Dennis Hillyard and John Benkert who tied for second.
Randy Bird and Jack White edged Robertson and Leiper by .77 of a stroke to win the Chapman Scotch nine. Collins and Wilde eked out a narrow win in the scramble nine by .88 of a stroke over Cowee and Peters. Gentry and Harn finished one shot ahead of Greg Newman and Rankin Lynn in the final total score nine.
Cockerill, Greenman win
Thunder Canyon title
Kathy Cockerill and Lynn Greenman combined for a net 157 to win Thunder Canyon’s 2014 Rendezvous Wine and Roses event.
The first day was partners’ best ball and the second day was cha cha.
Barbee Waldren and Jeanne Brennan were second at 159 while Shirley Westfall and Brooke Nielsen were third at 161.
Westfall and Nielsen were first in the Vineyard cross country alternate shot with a 16. Karon Sullivan and Shelly Brewster-Meredith were at 18 along with Çockerill and Greenman.
In the 9-hole Rendezvous event, JoAnne McKnight, Tina Hughes and Barbara Culbert were at 84.
Swann quartet wins
Empire Ranch tourney
Geoff Swann, Dennis Justin, Robey Willis and Duane Carroll shot a net 49 to edge Tom Zogorski, Rudy Hammond, Nils Sharpe and Phil Polaske in a tiebreaker to win Flight A at the weekly Empire Ranch Senior Men’s scramble event at Eagle Valley West on June 18.
Ken Stone, Mike Rogers, Roger Maxwell and Dino Dicianno also shot a 49 and finished third. In Flight B, Bob Pluth, Marty Martinez, Dan Rodgers and Clark Reid won with a net 49, one stroke ahead of John Masiello, Nick Paul, Jim Green and John Lewis. Peter Young, Richard Ziegler, Wes Franklin and Paul Seaman also shot 50, but were in third place on a tiebreaker.
Butler ties for 6th
at NNJGA tourney
Carson High’s Dalton Butler tied for sixth in the 15-17 age group at Sunday’s Northern Nevada Junior Golf Association event at Lakeridge Golf Course in Reno.
Butler carded a 6-over-par 78 in finishing seven shots behind Jay Babu. Narayan Gill was second with a 73 and Griffin Cooper was third with a 74. Jeffrey Heathman and Matthew Perera tied for fourth at 77 followed by Butler, David Larragueta and Tommy McAlister. Danny Manning was 14th with an 87.
Michelle Duan won the girls 13-17 title with a 78. Douglas’ Koko Tereda tied for eighth with a 94. Dylan Menante won the boys 13-14 with an even-par 72.
On Monday, Tiffany Rubins won the girls 13-17 group with a 50, while Lily Landt won the girls 11-12 group, also with a 50. Grayson Cooper (42) won the 7-8 boys, Isaac O’Neill (46) won the 9-10 and Presley Lorentzen (40) won the boys 11-12 title.
Watson & Watson team
up for CVGC triumph
John Watson and Glenn Watson teamed up for a 98 to win the Carson Valley Golf Club’s 2-man team best ball event on June 22.
The format was one ball on the front nine and two on the back.
Dennis Morris and Charles Poe were second in Flight A with a 99, while Kenny Smetreski and Marc Prause were third at 101. Frank Tisiot and Frank Temple won Flight B with a 93, while Bruce Sanford and Roger Hala were second at 98. Neil Bain and Jim Travernier were third at 103.
Carson Tennis Club
