Sale today benefits Hudak family

All proceeds from a rummage and bake sale and car wash from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in the north parking lot of Carson High School will benefit the Hudak family.

Vicki Hudak, a mother of two former Carson High School students, is battling pancreatic cancer.

Volunteers are sought to help at the event, which will also offer pony rides. Contributions of baked goods and lemonade will also be accepted.

Library plans CSI workshop July 9

Join teens and the Douglas County Public Library Teen Advisory Board from 4 to 5:30 p.m. July 9 at the Minden library, where Sgt. Pat Brooks from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office will walk teens through a staged crime scene investigation. Participants can examine evidence and learn crime scene techniques.

The free program includes snacks and beverages. Sign up is required by Tuesday, July 8.

The Teen Crime Scene Investigation workshop is sponsored by the Friends of the Douglas County Public Library and Douglas County Public Library TAB. The Minden Library is located at 1625 Library Lane. Full moon hike July 12 in Washoe Valley

Families are invited to hike along the Deadman’s Creek trail at Washoe Lake State Park and watch the sunset and moon rise from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. July 12, when the moon will be at its closets point to Earth.

The two-mile moderate hike is limited to 30 participants; reservations are required and can be made by calling 775-687-4319 or emailing washoelake@hdiss.net. Submit name, phone number and number of people. A park representative will confirm reservations.

Participants are asked to wear sturdy hiking shoes and bring water, a camera and flashlight. Dogs are allowed but must remain on a leash. Meeting location will be made known upon registration.

The event is sponsored by Nevada State Parks. The program is free, but there is a $7 per vehicle entrance fee, and Nevada residents receive a $2 discount.

Fast draw championship shoot set in Genoa

Genoa Mavericks will host Cowboy Fast Draw Nevada State Championship shoot from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 4-6 at 2242 Main St. in Genoa.

Children’s summer camp planned at WNC

Two week-long sessions are available in Western Nevada College’s College for Kids camp held during the last two weeks in July.

The schedule for July 14-18 is as follows: Basic Forensics: CSI for Kids will be held from 8 to 10 a.m.; Astronomy for Kids through Arts, Crafts & Nature will be from 10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.; Math for Astronomy will be from 1 to 3 p.m.; and Nutrition for Kids with 30 minutes of yoga will be from 3:15 to 5 p.m.

The schedule for July 21-25 is as follows: Archaeology: Digs for Kids will be from 8 to 10 a.m.; Astronomy for Kids through Arts, Crafts & Nature will be from 10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.; Math for Astronomy will be from 1 to 3 p.m.; Creatures and Cultures of Star Trek and Star Wars will be from 3:15 to 5 p.m.

Baby-sitting certification, a one-day class that costs $72, will be offered from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. July 16.

Options include: one class for one week at $56 per class; two morning or afternoon classes for one week for $90, or both daily sessions for $120 per week.

Workshop on growing lavender set

Western Nevada College Specialty Crop Institute will offer a commercial lavender production workshop from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. July 28 at the college’s Carson City campus, 2201 W. College Parkway.

Attendees will begin the day at Campie’s Lavender Patch in Stagecoach, where owners Mike and Diane van Camp will demonstrate planting and pruning techniques. In the classroom, Andy Van Hevelingen, co-owner and manager of Van Hevelingen Herb Nursery in Newberg, Ore., will talk about the best varieties to grow, market considerations and the applications for different lavender scents, including samples of different varieties. He will demonstrate a simple small-scale distillation process using a microwave oven that can be used to test lavender quality.

The cost, which includes lunch, is $25 for those registering by July 21 and $35 afterward. Online registration is available at http://www.wnc.edu/ce/sci/.
