Carson City Little League’s 9-10 all-star team refuses to quit.
After pounding Centennial 17-2 on Sunday, the locals followed that up with a 12-7 win Monday over Reno Continental at Governors Field to remain alive in the double elimination tournament.
The win moved Carson into a 5:30 p.m. game today against either Reno American or Reno National on Field No. 3. Carson opened the tournament with a 4-3 loss to Reno National.
Carson trailed 5-2 after two innings, as Continental parlayed two hits, two walks and an error into a five-run second inning.
Carson answered back, scoring six in the third and five more in the fifth.
Vinny Ferretti had a run-scoring single, Cam Boeckman’s infield single drove in a run and Justin Nussbaumer doubled home three runs to cap the surge. Carson never trailed the rest of the way.
Continental closed to 7-6 when Luke Metzker walked and came around to score on a passed ball.
Neither team scored in the fourth, and Carson broke it open with the aforementioned five runs in the fifth.
Boeckman singled and moved to third on Nussbaumer’s double to right. Eddie Tierney walked to load the bases. Luke Pedersen followed with a two-run single to make it 9-6. Dillon Damico walked, and after consecutive strikeouts, Ferretti’s groundball was misplayed, allowing two runs to score to make it 11-6. Ashton Davenport capped the rally with a run-scoring single and a 12-6 lead.
Damico, the third Carson pitcher on the day, plunked Jake Woodhead to start the bottom of the sixth. He moved to second on a wild pitch and to third on an error. He scored on Matt Capel’s liner to center that Boeckman made a sensational diving catch on.
In the win over Centennial on Sunday, Tierney, Pedersen and A.J. Kunter shared the mound chores in the four-inning contest.
Tierney, Boeckman and Nussbaumer all went 3-for-4. Tierney hit a three-run homer, Boeckman scored three times and Nussbaumer scored twice. Pedersen hit a two-run single. Damico, Ferretti, Jake O’Brien and Trey Thomas all had a hit apiece.
