Four more dogs test negative for rabies

Investigation from a rabies case linked to Carson City has determined that three more puppies and the mother of the litter prompting the probe have tested negative for the disease, but one puppy that might have been exposed still hasn’t been found.

Carson City Health and Human Services (CCHHS) said Monday it obtained the latest testing results from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on a trio of puppies and their mother. Affected families have been notified, the agency said.

“There still is a risk that the remaining puppies are infected,” said Taylor Radtke, CCHHS public-information officer. There were 10 puppies in the litter involved, and “it is still extremely important to identify the remaining 10th puppy from the litter.”

The puppies were sold or given away from a household in Douglas County. After two people initially were exposed in Carson City because of one puppy, the probe was initiated. Last week the local health agency said the CDC had begun testing pertinent animals, and that 25 people had been exposed.

This has been the first rabies case in Nevada in about a generation, CCHHS has said.
