Sheriff with a heart: A resident of Virginia, one of the victims of the prevailing hard times, went into the store and ordered a sack of flour. The grocer asked him if he had money to pay for it. He replied he didn’t. The man walked over to the flour pile, picked up a sack and proceeded home. The grocer immediately notified the sheriff who started out to find his man. When the sheriff knocked on the door, he beheld the man mixing bread and five small children hanging on to him, crying with hunger. The sheriff said nothing. He turned around, made for the store, put his hand in his pocket, paid for the stolen flour and walked out. Thousands of spectators gathered to watch skiers at Heavenly Valley for the seventh annual John Denver Celebrity Ski Classic. More than 40 celebrities braved the slopes under the cloudless skies at Heavenly Valley.
