A foundation established to raise funds to build a sport aviation center on the east side of Minden-Tahoe Airport has received tax exempt status.

“The tax exempt status for the Sports Aviation Foundation is a critical step forward supporting fundraising to achieve the sport and recreational aviation goals at the Minden Tahoe Airport,” said foundation President Linda Mae Draper-Hivert.

The foundation received its 501(c)3 designation form IRS on Feb. 7. The project will include a museum highlighting the significant soaring history in Carson Valley, interactive displays and aeronautical activities for youth and a convention center for enhancing tourism interest in the area.

The designation will allow for donations to the foundation to be tax deductible.

The Minden-Tahoe Airport is the only financially self-sufficient general aviation airport in Nevada and has an annual economic impact in excess of $47 million with 130 airport and aviation jobs in the various airport-based businesses, according to the county. Already committed for utility construction on the east side is $1.5 million.

“The Minden-Tahoe Airport is pleased to see this designation for SAF and is working vigorously to begin the installation of utilities in support of the airport’s eastside development this fall,” said Airport Manager Bobbi Thompson.

The airport continues to generate a significant economic impact for Douglas County and hosts multiple events such as the 2014 National 18-Meter Championship happening in June which county officials say generates an estimated 400 room nights, retail shopping and hospitality.

Minden-Tahoe Airport is well known for its soaring conditions, including the mountain wave in winter and thermal activity in the spring and summer.
