New entrance open at Bordewich-Bray

Students and parents will return today to Bordewich-Bray Elementary School to find the front office at the opposite end of the school.

Rather than enter through the south doors, visitors will be directed to enter through the north entrance off of King Street.

In keeping with the Carson City School District’s initiative to create single points of entry at each school, all other doors at the school will remain locked. Visitors will enter a locked vestibule and check in with the front office before being admitted to the school.

“I’m excited,” said Principal Karen Simms. “I think it will be a good way to direct traffic and keep everybody organized.”

Although it is a big change, Keith Shaffer, project manager for the Carson City School District, said he thinks it will be an easy adjustment for parents.

“They’re used to dropping off and picking up there,” he said. “We never really allowed parents to drive in back because that’s where the buses drop off. That’s part of the reason why we moved it.”

Students will continue to enter the playground through the same gate.

Construction has been going on all year at the school, moving the front office to the former library space. The library was moved into a portable building adjacent to the school.

“Clark and Sullivan Construction has done such a good job that it’s actually been minimal disruption to the work of everyday school,” Simms said.

Construction is now underway to transfer the library into the area where the front office was.

Simms said the construction is expected to be completed in about five weeks.

“It’ll be fantastic to have the school done,” she said.
