WOODEN NICKEL: While Carson City has seen businesses open on the periphery of downtown in the past year — Carson Mall’s resurgence is a prime example — the city center is losing a tenant come March 29. High Sierra Brewing Co. is closing its doors after a short run, with owner Jim Phalan citing lease and cash-flow issues. A remodel is set for June at the property, which has been home to various businesses through the years. Property manager Steve Neighbors says the location could be home to more than one business once that work is complete; we hope they’re able to stick around for a while.

SILVER DOLLAR: Carson High School’s bowling team defeated Bishop Manogue 34-11 to win the High Desert championship this past week. The team reached the finals by defeating Reed 25-20. Congratulations to all.

WOODEN NICKEL: Originally, the goal was for Nevada to have 118,000 people signed up for the state health insurance exchange by March 31. The board overseeing the rollout lowered its expectations significantly, resetting the bar at 50,000 people. With two weeks remaining before the deadline, it looks like we’re not even going to hit that mark. As of last week, 30,000 people had chosen coverage plans through the state exchange, and only 21,000 had paid for it. Fourteen states and the District of Columbia opted to operate their own exchanges rather than go with the federal system, and Nevada’s initially was one of the better performers. That has changed as the months have passed. We’re tired of the continuous disappointments related to the rollout of Obamacare.
