Carson High softball wins 3 games; Western Nevada baseball rolling

REDDING, Calif. — Jennifer Purcell fanned 11 and pitched a 3-hitter to lead Carson High’s softball team to a 2-1 win over Lassen at the Redding Invitational Friday afternoon at the Field of Dreams Complex.

Carson (4-5 overall) won its second game, 5-3, over Chico. Carson blanked Fortuna, 4-0, in the nightcap as Purcell fanned eight and walked one.

Two of the three hits off Purcell came in the fourth when Lassen scored its only run. Lassen got the tying run to third with one out in the seventh, but Purcell fanned the last two batters of the contest.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth, Carson tied the game when Purcell doubled and scored on a single by Aubrey Northrup. Carson scored the go-ahead run in the sixth on two Lassen errors.

Kandis Tuttle led Carson’s offense with two hits.

Against Chico, the Senators grabbed a 4-0 lead through three innings thanks to a run-scoring single by Kaitlyn Jimmy, a two-run double by Becka Breuer and a run-scoring single by Michelle Perry. Two errors and a double by Northrup accounted for Carson’s last run in the fifth.

Chico scored twice in the fifth and once in the sixth. Jimmy recorded the win, going 4.2 innings and allowing one earned run and four hits. Purcell picked up the save.

Northrup went 2-for-3 with an RBI against Fortuna, while Bailey Allen, Purcell, Malia Tiffer and Gabby Winder added a hit each.

Dayton 3, Spring Creek 2

ELKO — Makayla Shadle threw a 1-hitter and drove in the winning run to lead the Dust Devils (5-0, 1-0) to a win in their Northern Division 1A opener on Friday.

Shadle struck out 15 and walked two. Spring Creek scored single runs in the third and fifth.

Dayton took a 2-1 lead in the fourth and then Shadle doubled in what proved to be the winning run.

Hannah Stevenson went 1-for-2 and scored a run.

The teams play a doubleheader today at 11 a.m.

Wildcats are red hot

HENDERSON — Western Nevada scored five times in the third inning en route to an 8-3 win over College of Southern Nevada in the first game of Friday’s Scenic West Athletic Conference doubleheader.

In the second game, CSN avoided a series sweep with a 4-3 victory.

CSN scored in the second off Rayne Raven, who scattered five hits and one earned run in picking up the win.

CSN made two errors that led to four unearned runs in the third. Sam Hall and Kody Reynolds had run-scoring hits in the third. WNC made it 7-1 in the fifth on two walks and two wild pitches. CSN scored one in the bottom of the inning to make it 7-2 after five. Both teams scored a run in the sixth.

Reynolds went 3-for-4 and Hall went 2-for-3 to lead the WNC offense.

In the second game, WNC led 3-2 after four innings. Conner Klein walked with the bases loaded to force home a run in the first, and Conor Harber and Joey Crunkilton delivered run-scoring singles for the last two Wildcat runs.

A wild pitch enabled CSN to tie the game in the fifth, and Zach Scott’s single in the seventh ended up being the game-winnng hit.

WNC went hitless over the final five innings.

CSI sweeps Wildcats

TWIN FALLS, Idaho — Short-handed Western Nevada dropped a pair of 11-0 games to College of Southern Idaho in a Scenic West Athletic Conference doubleheader Friday afternoon.

The Wildcats are still without top pitcher Carlee Beck (arm) and Madi Gonzalez (concussion). And, to make matters worse, first baseman Hali Bennion was hit in the jaw by a line drive, and taken to the hospital.

When the teams square off today, WNC will field just nine healthy players. Coach Leah Wentworth said Gonzalez could be available in an emergency situation.

In the opener, WNC managed just three hits, two by Meghan Hospodka and one by Katilyn Covione.

In the second game, WNC managed just two hits, one each by Lindsey Ashbaugh and Covione.

Today’s doubleheader starts at noon.
