Senator Square: High school groups need funding for travel expenses

As the school year enters the last quarter, many of the skill-oriented organizations at CHS have participated in their respective district and state competitions, thus qualifying many students for national level competitions.

While these are proud moments for our students and staffers who have worked so hard throughout the school year to achieve this level of success, it is also a stressful time, as they now have the daunting task of raising lots of money in order to get to these national competitions in places such as Florida, Minnesota, Kentucky and Tennessee. Congratulations to all of our national qualifiers.

I invite the community to support these students with financial contributions. A lifetime of memories, experiences and skills are being learned and practiced with these organizations of students.

HOSA ADVANCES TO NATIONALS

The HOSA, Future Health Professionals, held the state leadership conference March 16-18 in Reno. During the conference, 40 CHS students attended educational symposiums, mini-sessions, skill sessions and testing sessions and performed skills in front of judges from the various medical professions.

We are honored to have 22 national qualifiers who will go and compete in Orlando, Fla., against qualifiers from across the United States.

We are also very proud to have one of our students elected to a state office. Bryen Holloway is the second vice president, and the first state HOSA officer from CHS.

ENGINEERING STUDENTS TO NATIONALS

Congratulations to first-year engineering students Christian Okamoto, Tyler Lethcoe and John Rowe who are one of 12 teams nationwide invited to the national bridge building contest in Louisville, Ken. FBLA TEAM TO NATIONALS

Even though the state competition for FBLA is still a month away, one of the teams within CHS FBLA has already been notified as placing top 12 in the nation in a competition sponsored by LifeSmarts, Inc. Seniors Porfirio Jauregui and Bryan Dones will represent CHS in Nashville, Tenn., at the FBLA National Leadership Conference. CULINARY STUDENTS TO NATIONALS

CHS Culinary Arts is hosting a fundraiser at Silver Oak Golf & Event Center on April 9. A four-course dinner will be served with a silent auction to take place during the evening. All proceed go directly to the students who recently won the Nevada State ProStart culinary competition and are headed to the National Competition in Minnesota. TAYLOR WINS STATE AWARD

Nevada High School Athletic Directors Association selected Kathy Taylor as Large School Secretary of the Year. Bob Bateman, athletic director, nominated Mrs. Taylor for the honor. She was presented this award during the conference Feb. 28 held at UNR during the state basketball tournament. Congratulations to Kathy! We are so lucky to have her on staff at CHS.

SHERIFF’S OFFICE HELPS HEALTH CLASSES

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office was at the high school this week educating 600 freshmen students about the dangers of drug use and gang membership. The health classes learned a lot and we would like to thank the deputies who spent two days with us reaching our students.

Also, there will be a Health Fair and Kidney Walk at CHS on 5. Registration takes place in the north foyer at 9 a.m. The walk begins at 9:30. For more information, contact Erin Been at ebeen@carson.k12.nv.us or 283-1763.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

This week’s senior spotlight is on Sam Bruketta. Sam has attained a weighted grade-point average of 4.5 while consistently challenging himself with a schedule full of honors and advanced-placement classes.

Sam is a member of the AP Government We the People class that recently competed at the state competition. He has also keeps himself active and involved here at Carson High. You may spot Sam at many of our school events as he is currently our student body president.

He was also in student government last year as junior class president. Some of the other activities Sam is involved with are the Rock Climbing Club, Blue Crew, National Honor Society and FBLA. He also plays tennis and golf for CHS.

Sam will be attending UNR next year. He plans to major in civil engineering. Carson High is proud to feature such a talented and promising individual. Congratulations Sam and much luck in your future.
