Community sports: Silver State spikers take second in Colorado

Silver State’s 18-year-old volleyball squad took second place at the recent Colorado Crossroads, a national qualifier, in Denver.

More than 1,280 teams competed in multiple age brackets. The teams represented 27 states.

Silver State, coached by Justin Malley and Danny McLaughlin, reeled off nine straight victories before losing 25-14 and 25-20 in the finals to Midwest Volleyball Power Blue.

Only twice in its nine wins was Silver State extended to three games.

Silver State opened with a 25-12 and 25-22 win over 303 Volleyball Club; topped Vertical 18 Black 25-13, 15-25 and 15-8; edged Club One Arizona 18 Blue 26-24 and 25-22; topped team Pueblo 25-16 and 25-21; defeated NCVC 18-2 RoShamBo 25-15 and 27-25; edged Cova 181 25-18 and 25-22; slipped past North Point 18U 25-23 and 25-20; breezed by A5 Mizuno 182 Marc 26-24 and 25-17; and edged Topeka Impact 18-1 28-26, 24-26 and 15-11.

The team was led by Madi Foley of Dayton, who had 76 kills and 107 digs to go along with a 2.20 passing/serve receive. Galena’s Kourtney Sidener contributed 32 kills and 13 blocks, while Mackenzie Redner of Truckee had 31 kills and 50 digs to go along with a 2.28 serve-receive. Galena’s Casey Kline had 27 kills and 22 blocks with a 2.46 serve-receive. Brooke Larson, also of Galena, had 29 kills and 16 blocks. Reed’s Madison Funk added 26 kills and 23 blocks. Dayton’s Taryn Schriner contributed 48 kills and a 2.31 serve-receive.

Three aces at Eagle Valley

Three Northern Nevada golfers recorded aces at Eagle Valley in the last two months.

On March 19, Eldon Chouinard of Reno aced the par-3 17th on the East course using an Adams 8-iron and a Srixon ball. It was his first career ace.

On March 12, Rick Hudson of Yerington aced the par-3 4th hole on the East course with an 8-iron. It was his first ace.

On Feb. 11, Carson’s Vinnie Baum, recorded his fifth career ace when he holed out his 5-iron tee shot on No. 17 on the West course.

Dolce wins at Empire Ranch

Tony Dolce shot a net 65 to win Flight A at the weekly Empire Ranch Senior Men’s Club stroke play event on March 19.

Jim Sand was second with a 67, while David Knighton and Geoff Swann tied for third with 68s. Ken Cuneo won the B flight with a 58, three strokes better than Norm Scroggin and eight better than Henry Ortiz and George Flamer. Mart Martinez won the C flight with a 58, two shots better than Clark Reid and three better than Greg Bentley and Jim Watt.
