Senator Square: FBLA students perform well at state competition

Eighteen CHS students attended and competed at the Nevada State Future Business Leaders of America competition last week. Out of those 19 events, CHS had top-10 finishers in 15 events. Here is a list of the students that placed top 10:

Lifesmarts (top 12 in nation): Porfirio Jauregui and Bryan Dones (both seniors).

Margaret Duvall, first place in Business Law; fifth place in Agribusiness; sixth place in Client Service: fourth place in Global Business Presentation.

Porfirio Jauregui, first place in Computer Problem Solving; third place in Impromptu Speaking; seventh place in Networking Concepts.

Maritsa Mora, fourth place in Global Presentation; 10th place in Health Care Administration.

Daniel Yosefat, sixth place in Networking Concepts.

Bryan Dones, fifth place in Personal Finance and Who’s Who in FBLA Chapter Recipient. Daniel Jauregui and Lauren Weddell, fourth place in Business Presentation.

Matt Salvador, Victor Quispe and Danny Jauregui, sixth place in Business Plan. Laurel Weddell, fourth place Public Speaking. Mia Brozovich, 10th place in Help Desk.

In Public Speaking, Sam Sprock placed fifth, Shaylin Segura placed eighth and Kacey Lopes placed ninth.

The following students were awarded National Business Honor Roll: Kacey Lopes, Magaret Duvall, Shaylin Segura, Elizabeth Flansberg and Lake Shank. The chapter also took second place in the Battle of the Chapters.

The top three finishers automatically advance to nationals in Nashville, Tenn., June 27-July 2. If you’d like to make a donation to sponsor those students headed to nationals contact their advisor at agolik@carson.k12.nv.us.

NATIONAL HISTORY DAY

ENGINEERING STUDENTS DISPLAY their WORK

Come see what CHS students are designing. Drafting and Engineering students will be displaying their work before and during the May 13 school board meeting at the Community Center in the Sierra room starting at 6 p.m. Advanced CADD student Ashley Andreas has this to say about her design work this year, “This year I have been challenged to think outside of the box, and I am very excited about the end products. We have had some great assignments this year and everyone should go check out the amazing things the CADD classes have done.”

LINK CREW FUNDRAISER

Link Crew will have a car wash fundraiser 10 a.m.-3 p.m. May 17 in the front driveway of Carson High School. A donation of $5 is requested.

SAFE GRAD VOLUNTEERS

The Carson High School PTSA Safe Grad night is fast approaching and we are reaching out to the Parents of CHS students and to the community for volunteers for the overnight event. The Safe Grad Program has been a tradition in Carson City for more than 25 years and provides the graduating senior class with a safe, fun and sober celebration on graduation night.

The Carson High PTSA, Carson City Sheriff’s Office, Nevada Office of Traffic Safety, and local businesses and residents help sponsor the event. This has proven to be a tremendous success throughout the years since there has not been a graduate fatality on graduation night since the program’s inception in 1988.

The Safe Grad event will be May 31 thru June 1 at the Community Center.

We still need more than 60 volunteers. Volunteers will help with registration, bag check, food, games and activities, door monitors and raffles, and set-up and clean-up. This event could not take place without our generous volunteers that make it happen.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

This week the Senior Spotlight shines on Jennifer Huckabay. Jennifer has a 4.78 weighted grade-point average and has a course load filled with advanced-placement classes, as well as her favorite electives, choir and advanced web design.

Jennifer has been very involved during her four years at Carson High School. She has earned a spot in the All-State as well as Honor Choir three years, spent three years in Skills USA, honing her web design skills, and raced on the ski team. She was also involved in the “We the People” with her government class, earning fourth place at the district competition.

Jennifer has enlisted in the US Navy, where she will be a part of their nuclear propulsion program. She plans to eventually attend MIT and earn a degree in Nuclear Physics. Carson High School would like to congratulate Jennifer on all of her achievements and wish her all the best in the future.

Angila Golik is a government teacher at Carson High School and also a member of Senator Pride.
