Pack wins elimination game

LAS VEGAS — University of Nevada (29-26) junior Jason Deitrich tossed a shutout as the Wolf Pack eliminated San Jose State (19-38) from the Mountain West Championship with a 4-0 victory over the Spartans today at UNLV’s Earl E. Wilson Stadium. The Wolf Pack improved to 29-26 while the Spartans end the year 19-38.

The Pack plays an elimination game at 11 a.m. today. Nevada would play again at 3 p.m. with a victory in the first game on Friday.

Nevada scored three times in the bottom of the second inning off Spartan starter Myles Richard. Designated hitter Ryan Teel singled home the first run of the inning and shortstop Kyle Hunt’s single scored two to put the Pack on top 3-0. Teel doubled and later scored Nevada’s final run of the game on a wild pitch in the fourth.

The four runs would be more than enough for Deitrich (3-2) as he won for the third time and pitched the Pack’s first complete game shutout of the season. The righty allowed 10 hits and struck out two, throwing 128 pitches in the game. Richard (2-4) suffered the loss as he was charged with all four Nevada runs in the game.

Teel (3-for-4, 2 runs, RBI) topped the Pack with three hits, scored twice and drove in one. Center fielder Trenton Brooks (2-for-4) and third baseman Bryce Barger (2-for-3, run) contributed two hits apiece as the team totaled 11. Hunt drove in a game-high two.

Kyle Gallegos, Matt Lopez, and Kalei Contrades had two hits each for the Spartans.
