Preston, 400 relay team lead CHS effort

Madison Preston has been the queen of the triple jump in Northern Nevada this year, and she continued her domination on Saturday.

On her second jump of the day, Preston uncorked a person best of 37-feet 3 3/4-inches to take second place behind Arbor View’s Jocelyn Jordan at the NIAA State Track & Field Championships at the Jim Frank Track Complex at Carson High School.

Preston, who was disappointed with her fourth-place finish in the long jump on Friday, was in a much better frame of mind after the triple jump.

“I did better,” Preston said. “I thought I could do better. I was one up (place) from last year. On that (37-3 3/4 jump) I felt good. I was a foot behind the board still.”

Translation? She could have gone much farther.

Two state medals is nothing to sneeze at, and it gives Preston something to build on entering her senior year.

Carson’s 400-meter relay team of ValerieSue Meyer, Athena Favero, Sahara Winder and Josilyn Daggs ran a 49.43 to finish third. Daggs was impressive on her anchor leg, passing a couple of runners.

“I was hoping we’d get at least fourth,” Meyer told coaches after the race.

The 49.43 was a PR. The previous best was a 50.90 back on April 26 at the Carson Invitational.

Favero took fifth in the 300 hurdles, clocking a 46.21, which was .39 faster than she ran in the regional finals last weekend. Centennial’s Tiana Bonds, who won the 100 hurdles on Friday, set a new state meet and stadium record with her 41.47. She broke her own state-meet mark of 41.84 set in 2013, and she shattered Gabby Williams’ stadium mark of 44.14.

Douglas’ Savannah Haase was fourth in the shot with an effort of 36-0 1/4.

Centennial’s Sydney Badger capped a three-win weekend by winning the 800 (2:10.28) and the 3200 (11:13.41). In the 3200, Badger was content to stay in second and third through the first seven laps. She made her move on Reno freshman Kyra Hunsberger in the final 200 meters, and the Reno phenom didn’t have an answer. On Friday, Badger won the 1600.

Liberty’s Ashlie Blake, who won the discus on Friday, took the shot on Saturday with a throw of 50-1 1/4, a stadium record.

Turner wins for Dayton

Kaylee Turner, a junior, capped a nice weekend by winning the shot put with a throw of 37-4 to beat Sparks rival Senifa Po’oi by nearly two feet.

It was her best throw of the season. She finished third in the event as a sophomore.

“I’m excited,” said Turner, who moved into first after her fifth throw.

Turner started her series of six throws with identical 34-6 efforts, according to coach Mike Paul.

“She improved every throw after that,” Paul said. “Kaylee had an interesting year. It was a tough year for all my throwers. Kaylee looked really good at the start of the year, but then she fell off in the middle of the year. She got out of rhythm and lost her confidence. We went through some changes. The last week of practice she was really dialed in and found it. I think she looked a little more confident.”

Lettie Lynch ran a season-best 12.98 in the 100, but managed just a sixth-place finish.

Sierra Lutheran girls outlast Beatty

Sierra Lutheran outscored Beatty 114-104 for the D-4 crown.

Sabrina Ronato won the shot put (32-5), while Camille Cassidy was second in the 100 (13,67) and second in the 800 (2:38.24). Cali Benton was third in the triple jump at 31-9 3/4. Clare Davison was fourth in the 800 at 2:41.42.
