Senator Square: As time goes by — fast; another great year

I find it almost impossible to believe I am writing the last article of the school year. The year went by so fast. My mother always warned me time goes faster as you get older, I’m starting to believe her words of wisdom.

Carson High School had a monumental year, and I want to wish the Class of 2014 the best of luck and happiness in their futures. You have made our school and community proud in so many ways! Congratulations!

Finals will take place this last week of school. For a complete schedule, visit carsonhigh.com.

Also, this is the last Senator Square for this school year. I will return Aug. 17 with a new article.

CARNETA YEARBOOK WINS AWARD

The 2014 CHS Carneta yearbook was again inducted into Walsworth Yearbook’s Gallery of Excellence. The Gallery of Excellence is a showcase of the best yearbooks published by Walsworth. Only a small percentage of Walsworth Company yearbooks are selected for the gallery.

Executive editor of this year’s Carneta was Jessica Hoyos Velazquez. Editors were Sophie Williams, Kaitlyn Jimmy and Brandon Donovan. This is the 13th award of this kind presented to CHS’s Carneta since 2000. Yearbooks in the gallery are used by the company to demonstrate coverage, design, copy and photography to schools nationwide.

The Carneta is produced each year by the publications class at CHS. The class is open to freshmen through seniors. In addition to the yearbook, the staff produces the online and print Senator News newspaper. Congratulations to Ms. Patt Quinn-Davis and her students for this award and recognition.

CULINARY NEWS

The CHS ProStart team, sponsored by the National Restaurant Association, recently competed in the National ProStart Invitational in Minnesota. The team consisting of Andrea Davis, Genoa Donaldson, Max Demar, Christian Kivi and Dakota Marinez placed seventh in the nation.

Their teacher, Penny Reynolds, won the National ProStart Teacher of the Year Award at a separate event in Chicago last week. It is the James H. Maynard Excellence of Education Award sponsored by Golden Corral and the National Restaurant Association Education Foundation. We are so proud of this program and elated for our very own Ms. Reynolds for winning this esteemed award. Way to represent CHS!

ART FOR SALE

Students at Carson High have paintings for sale in the showcase in front of the guidance office. Art pieces start at $10 and go up from there. Please contact art teacher Mike Malley at 790-3614 for more information. Thanks for supporting our students.

THANK YOU BUSINESSES

Thank you to the businesses in our community that open their doors to the Carson High Vocational Program. They make our staff and students feel like they are part of their staff. The students in this program have a chance to learn job skills with hands-on training.

These businesses are Ormsby Post Acute Rehab, DMV, FISH Dining Room, Applebee’s, Lone Mountain Veterinary Hospital, Carson City Library, Grocery Outlet and Gold Dust West Bowling Center.

Learning vocational skills gives the students a chance to gain meaningful employment and be productive members of our community. Thank you for everything you do for us! Have a great summer and we’ll see you for the 2014-15 school year.
