7 CHS players honored for baseball

Seven Carson High players — Chase Blueberg, Gehrig Tucker, Josiah Pongasi, T.J. Thomsen, Jace Zampirro, Brandon Allen and Dom Norton — were honored by the Northern Nevada Division I baseball coaches.

Galena’s Tim Lichty was named Player of the Year, Reno’s Matt Young Pitcher of the Year, Reno’s Jeremy Peterson Offensive Player of the Year, Douglas’ Kaleb Foster Defensive Player of the Year and Reno’s Pete Savage Coach of the Year.

Tucker hit .487, scored 24 runs and drove in 24 runs for the Senators, who went 14-19. Thomsen hit .365 with 16 RBI and 35 runs scored, Pongasi hit .337 with 18 RBI and 33 runs and Blueberg went 7-4 with a 5.41 ERA. All four CHS starters were selected second team.

Norton hit .361 with 25 RBI, Zampirro hit .366 with 24 RBI and Allen hit .364. The trio were part of the 30-man honorable mention list.

Purcell, Allen make

softball all-league

Jennifer Purcell and Bailey Allen received second-team all-Northern Division I softball honors.

Reno’s Joyce Cathey was named Coach of the Year, Reed’s Jessica Sellers was Most Valuable Player, Spanish Springs’ Alyssa Batastini was Pitcher of the Year and McQueen’s Sadaria McAlister was Offensive Player of the Year.

Purcell, who pitched, caught, played first and outfield, was a utility selection and Bailey was an infield selection.

Kandis Tuttle, Becka Breuer and Aubrey Northrup were part of the 29-player honorable mention list.

Carson’s Butler named

all-region for golf

Carson High’s Dalton Butler was a second-team Division I golfer and Andy Cooper was a third-team selection.

The selection is based on Butler’s seventh-place regional finish.

Butler was a first-team all-Sierra selection with 303 points. Jake Jones, Cooper and Sam Bruketta were honorable mention all-Sierra selections.

Nick Turner of Manogue was Player of the Year and Galena’s Ray Isernhagen was Coach of the Year.

Kipling, Everest

garner swim honors

Carson’s Dagen Kipling and Elizabeth Everest were all-region selections in swimming.

Kipling was a first-team selection in the 100 breast and a second-team selection in the 200 IM.

Everest was a second-team selection in the 200 and 500 free events.

Three-way tie

at Dayton event

Leo de Lapp, Dennis Hillyard and Greg Newman each shot a net 73 to win the Dayton Valley stroke-play tournament on May 10. Mark Wade was a stroke back at 74.

Hillyard had one gross skin and two net skins worth $200.

Doug Dougherty, Alex Gentry, Don Harn and Don Robertson tied for fifth at 76, John Dowling and Gary Leiper tied for ninth at 77, and Andrew Palmer and Vince McMahon tied for 11th with 78s.

Schellins, Becketts

grab first place

Mike and Donna Schellin, and Riley and Jane Beckett shot 112 to win first place at Thunder Canyon’s Memorial Day event which was a two better balls in a four-ball shamble.

Bill and Barbee Waldren and Bob and Monica Pike were second at 118, and Jack and Virginia Bonar and Mike Judge and Mike Bennert were third at 119. There was a four-way tie for fourth at 122.

• Pam Lippold shot a 67 to win top honors in Thunder Canyon’s individual net tournament. Christy Atenico, Jeanne Brennan and Karon Sullivan were three strokes back at 70.

• Max Gundlach shot 65 to win the men’s event. The format was purple, gold and white tees. Bruce Miller was second with a 70, while Charlie Cockerill and Bob Oglesby tied for third at 73.

Mick masters

Empire seniors

Gary Mick shot a net 59 to win the Empire Ranch Sr. Men’s Club event on May 21.

Jim Shabi was second at 61, John Pearson had a 62 and Carl Slate had a 66.

Night golf event

at Silver Oak

Silver Oak will host a Glow in the Dark event July 11 at 8:30 p.m.

The tournament is a scramble format and couples are encouraged to play. The tournament is limited to 48 players. The cost is $75 which includes, golf, cart, range balls, cocktails, glow balls, hors ‘doeuvres, closest-to-the-hole prizes and raffle prizes. For more information, call 841-7000 ext. 107.

Jim Silsby and Roger Williams won a tie-breaker over Gary Chong and Bill Premo to win Silver Oak’s Member-Guest event on May 18.

Larry Johnson and Don Fox shot 63, and there was a three-way tie for fourth with the team of Cory Hauck and Jim Sapien, William Kapczynski and Su Suh, and Dirk Davis and John Meyer.
