SILVER DOLLARS & WOODEN NICKELS: Nevada’s 150th was definitely something to sing about

The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.

SILVER DOLLAR: While numerous Silver Dollars could be given to so many people in this state for their roles in holding a year-long party celebrating Nevada’s 150th birthday, a Sesquicentennial-related Silver Dollars this week goes to Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki for his leadership in all the activities. Krolicki’s ultimate achievement may have been his idea for setting a world record sing-a-long at one time. And the state responded in tremendous fashion, with so many participating in the singing of “Home Means Nevada.” So a Silver Dollar to all those who participated as well. And a Silver Dollar to Krolicki and his committee overseeing Sesquicentennial activities. The far exceeded the goal of having 150 activities this year by organizing more than 500 activities to celebrate Nevada’s 150th birthday.

SILVER DOLLAR: Another Sesquicentennial-related Silver Dollar goes to all the Carson High students and other volunteers who painted the “C” on C Hill for this past week’s Sesquicentennial celebration.

SILVER DOLLAR: To Carson City’s Mackena Bell. who has been chosen to drive in the NASCAR Nationwide series in Phoenix on Nov. 8. The female driver, who has been racing since before she was a teenager, continues to rise up the ranks.

WOODEN NICKEL: He’s been an easy target, but this week’s Wooden Nickel goes to Democratic candidate for governor Bob Goodman, whose campaign has been lackluster at best. Representative of his campaign was a communication the Appeal received from him last week. A mailed letter. Now while we have the upmost respect for the U.S. Postal Service, you would at least think a candidate for governor could at least send us an email.
