Dayton’s Strickler earns medal at state meet

Dayton High’s Sydney Strickler finished sixth at last weekend’s NIAA Division 1-A State Cross Country Championship in Las Vegas.

Strickler ran a 20:09, which was 19 seconds faster than her regional time at Rancho San Rafael Park.

Strickler worked her way into fifth place halfway through the race, but was passed by two runners. In the final tenth of a mile, she moved ino the sixth spot and kept the spot by a step.

Brady Huesser, Dayton’s only boy entrant, finished 38th out of 52 runners. He ran an 18:40, 23 seconds better han his regional time.

“Both of them had terrific seasons,” Dayton coach Shawn Anderson. “Sydney improved her time every race, and Brady went from being my eighth runner last year to my first runner this year.

“It was hot in Vegas. Probably every runner in the north beat their times from the previous week because the new Vegas course is flat and fast.”

VOLLEYBALL

VC reaches state

Virginia City’s volleyball team won two of three matches at the Division IV regional tournament last weekend to reach this week’s state tournament.

VC beat Eureka 25-16, 25-17 and 25-19, and then knocked off Wells 25-19, 22-25, 25-23 and 25-13. In the finals, Smith Valley topped Virginia City 25-10, 25-19 and 25-12.

The Muckers play Pahranagat Valley Friday at 6:20 at Wooster. If VC wins, it will play in the finals Saturday at 4 p.m. at Galena.

POP WARNER

Mitey Mites triumph

Jessie Delgado ran for four touchdowns and Isaac Avina added two, as the Carson City Pop Warner Mitey Mites beat Fallon, 38-6, to win the Snow Bowl championship.

Carson advances to the regional playoffs in Reno on Nov. 22 against a yet-to-be determined opponent from California.

Nick Coughran, Caid Milligan, Johnny Newton, Nate McKee, Tristan Hawkins, Jessie Metoxen and Alex Myrehn played well offensively. Eric Pool, Alex Castillo, JT Heaton, Zach Guthrie and Brandon Bradley led the defense.
