Surveying difficulties. While Mr. H. H. Bence and another gentlemen were surveying town lots in the northern part of the city, one “Dublin Mary” came suddenly upon the scene, pitched the transit instrument pell-mell over an adjoining fence. When remonstrated by Mr. Bence’s associate, she gathered that gentleman by the coattail, splitting his outer garment from its cropper to his neck making him look like a dilapidated scarecrow. The instrument tossed about is totally ruined. According to Mr. Friend, it will cost as much as $200 to replace.

Lost wife. A gentleman in the northern part of the city missed his wife. He asked one of the boys where his mother was, and he said, “Up on the roof.” The lady had gone up on the roof to catch an escaped canary bird, and in the meanwhile, her husband had put away the step-ladder.

Little town. Las Vegas, the little town in Lincoln County that is trying to become an important railroad point, had a novel case in court — a man refused to give his name and was arrested for stealing a barrel of butter. He engaged an attorney, John de France, to defend him. In the first trial, the jury disagreed, and the next he was convicted and fined $500. The attorney was enraged and became so abusive that he was given a jail sentence for contempt of court and taken to the Pioche jail ...

Lions. John J. Nulty spoke at the Lions Club. He is a photographers mate in the U.S. Navy, visiting his mother, Mrs. Marie Nulty. He gave an account of some of his experiences in visiting the native villages on the Guadalcanal. He said the natives are extremely primitive and have only an occasional missionary visitor to educate them ...
