The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.
SILVER DOLLAR: To the Salvation Army for conducting its 16th annual Turkey Roundup and to all those who donated turkeys to the cause, making sure many of the less fortunate in our community are going to be able to celebrate Thanksgiving with a traditional meal. It’s a lot better way to give away turkeys than what happened on the 1970s television show, “WKRP In Cincinnati,” when the radio station used a unique method to give away turkeys. It definitely wasn’t a politically correct method by today’s standards, but it was absolutely hilarious. Look it up on YouTube.
SILVER DOLLAR: To Dan Gustin, the long-time broadcaster who’s best known as the former voice of Nevada Wolf Pack athletics, for beginning the “Friday Night Rivals” series this year being televised on KAME Channel 21. Thanks to Gustin, Northern Nevada high school athletes are receiving the recognition they deserve.
SILVER DOLLAR: To the Nevada Department of Transportation for providing an early Christmas present for travelers by completing the work on Kingsbury Grade way ahead of schedule.
