Carson High School craft fair a success

CRAFT FAIR SUCCESS

The following message is from Cathy Barbie, craft fair coordinator: The 20th annual Carson High Holiday Craft Fair was an outstanding success this year. Thanks to overwhelming support from the community, staff, students, and of course, the large number of skilled craftsmen and women who were vendors.

On Friday evening we had more than 100 customers through the door in the first hour and the traffic flow was continuous. This year’s craft fair brought in just under $15,000. The proceeds go to fund stipends for student clubs and organizations at CHS as well as provide senior scholarships. Several barrels of food were also donated to FISH.

If you were there, thanks so much! If you missed it, mark your calendar for next year’s event — it’s a shopping experience you won’t want to miss. Even Santa comes to this one.

ELECTION VOLUNTEERS

Carson High School seniors recently volunteered for the 2014 General elections in Carson City. Emely Lopez, Claudia Vazquez, Kimberly Torres, Karina Munoz, Maria Pacheco, Deanna Earwicker and Amber Seifert spent the day at the polls welcoming and assisting voters.

Each year, CHS government teachers work in conjunction with the Carson City Clerk-Recorder’s office to provide student volunteers for the elections. We’d like to wish outgoing Clerk-Recorder Alan Glover the best of luck in his retirement and we look forward to continuing our relationship with that office as Sue Merriwether begins her position as clerk-recorder.

BASEBALL FUNDRAISER

The CHS Baseball team and boosters are hosting dinner and poker night on Saturday, Jan. 24 at Silver Oak Golf Course. Dinner tickets are $25, and poker with dinner tickets are $60. Email ebeen@carson.k12.nv.us for a ticket.

SKI TEAM FUNDRAISER

As reported last week, the CHS ski team will be showing the latest Warren Miller film, “No Turning Back” at 7 p.m. Dec. 12 at the Carson Community Center. Tickets can be purchased from any ski team member, or Adrienne Evans (ski instructor) by contacting her at aevans@carson.k12.nv.us.

STUDENT OF THE WEEK

This week’s Student of the Week is Chelsea Phillips. Chelsea is a senior at Carson High School. She’s a talented artist and is always willing to create artistic projects for CHS and for the classroom. Chelsea is humble, hard-working and a self-motivated student. She’s supportive of her peers and offers constant encouragement to those in need. Thank you Chelsea for being an amazing student here at CHS.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

This week CHS would like to recognize Corey Reid as our senior in the spotlight. Corey has a 4.1 grade-point average and is challenging himself with five advanced-placement and honors classes. He has been a member of National Honor Society since his sophomore year, earned the academic letter every year in high school and is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Skills USA (technology) and competed at state last year.

Beyond academics and clubs, Corey is an athlete participating in many sports for the Senators. He has been a member of track and field and the football team for the past four years. His athletic excellence has earned him many awards. He has been regional champion in three events, and state champion last year in the 400 meters. At the state meet last season, he broke the state record in the 400 meter at our own school. Corey competes against college athletes and has been competitive against them at the national level. He broke three junior national records at the last USA Track & Field National Track Meet.

Corey has spent his middle school and high school summers traveling worldwide on mission and aid trips with a Christian performing group. He has traveled throughout Russia, Germany, Czech Republic, Austria, Mainland China, Hong Kong and Thailand. He lived among the locals, becoming immersed in their culture. He taught English in the schools and performed for elementary, middle and high school assemblies, churches, and community events. He also handed out food/clothes/necessities to those in need, taught and played with children in orphanages and was involved in building projects and sport tournaments. He performs with this group each Christmas for the Marine recruits at Camp Pendleton in San Diego. He’s made numerous friends worldwide and loves making a positive difference.

He recently signed his National Letter of Intent to accept an athletic and academic scholarship to compete for Azusa Pacific University in Southern California. APU is a Division II Christian University, well-known for its successful track program.

While attending APU, Corey plans to major in computer science.

CHS congratulates Corey on all of his amazing accomplishments both on and off the field and in the classroom.

We are proud of Corey and wish him more success in his future.
