Prep roundup: Ugly loss for Carson boys soccer

RENO — It could go down as the ugliest eight-minute stretch in Carson High soccer history.

Wooster scorched Carson’s defense for five goals on six shots in an eight-minute stretch in the second half en route to a 7-2 win over the Senators at Wooster High School.

The loss was the third straight for the Senators, who opened the season with four straight wins.

“Was that the ugliest second half you’ve ever seen?” asked Carson coach Mike Alvarez. “The defense broke down, and when you break down against a quality opponent like Wooster, you are going to pay the price.

“They are the best overall team we’ve played this year. I think North Valleys was very good. There is a lot of talent on that Wooster roster.”

Wooster was quicker and passed the ball better throughout the match.

Despite the Colts’ dominance, it was a 1-all tie after 41 minutes when Alex Gonzalez scored.

“I thought that would absolutely get us going,” Alvarez said.

It didn’t take long for the Colts to respond, and when they did, they scored goals in bunches.

A minute later, Edgar Ceja banged one that went off Victor Guardado’s hands, hit the post and went across the line to make it 2-1. Alvarez felt that took a little steam out of his team.

Three minutes later Froilan Noguera scored to make it 3-1 and Aldo Carpio made it 4-1 a minute later on a shot that went right through Guardado’s hands.

Jon Cuevas scored in the 48th minute for a 5-1 lead, and Salvador Jiminez made it 6-1 in the 50th minute. The score remained unchanged until the 68th minute when Milton Rubin scored to make it 7-1.

In the 71st minute, Jaime Saldana was pulled down in the penalty box, and Jose Lozano converted the penalty kick to complete the scoring.

The game started with Carson’s Ryan Galvan, who has nine goals on the season on the bench. He tweaked his ankle while scoring Carson’s only goal against Damonte Ranch.

Wooster had two scoring opportunities in the first 13 minutes,. one each by Ceja and Jiminez. Carson failed to mount any offense in that span.

In the 16th minute, Ceja touched a pass to Jiminez, who beat Guardado for a goal to break the scoreless tie.

Cuevas had two shots on goal in the next two minutes, and it wasn’t until the 24th minute that Carson had its first shot on goal, a header by Galvan.

Galena 2, Douglas 0

MINDEN — Douglas held its own well into the second half Wednesday before falling at home against Galena.

Galena broke up a scoreless tie in the 57th minute and then added some insurance on a penalty kick in the 66th minute.

Douglas dropped to 1-5-1 in league and 5-6-1 overall.

Galena (10-2 overall, 8-1 league) is riding a six-game win streak into its first-place showdown against Carson on Saturday. The Grizzlies have outscored their opposition by a combined 29-3 score during the win streak.

NIAA proposes moving spring sports

A proposal to start the 2015 spring season for all sports one week early will headline the agenda today when the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association Board of Control holds a special teleconference meeting.

Northern representatives will meet at 2 p.m. in the NIAA state office in Reno. Representatives from the South will meet in the Clark County School District Administrative Center in Las Vegas.

Washoe County Student Activities Director Brian Rothe and Division I Northern Region Commission Ron McNutt have requested the start date for spring sports to be moved from Feb. 28 to Feb. 21 in all divisions. The request stems from a decision approved in June by the NIAA to hold all state championship events one week before Memorial Day, wrapping up state championships on May 16. The 2015 season is the only one that will be impacted by the changes.

The request was tabled by board members on Sept. 24 during their regularly scheduled meeting at the Silver Legacy Resort and Casino in Reno.

Board members may accept, decline or table the proposal.

One other item on the agenda will be the formation of a committee to address realignment, postseason tournament format and universal tiebreakers for a period from 2016-2020.

Douglas spikers sweep Wooster

RENO — Douglas rolled to an easy 25-19, 25-21 and 25-0 win over Wooster Tuesday night in a Sierra League match.

Carmen Shaw had 12 kills, two aces and four blocks for the Tigers, and Maddy Lowe had two kills and 10 digs. Talyn Jackson finished with three aces, 13 assists and six digs. Emma Sperry had 11 assists. Isabelle Peterson had six kills and a dig.

GIRLS TENNIS

Douglas edges Reed

MINDEN — Madelyn Landerfelt went 3-0 and dropped just one game to lead Douglas to a 11-7 win in a makeup match on Wednesday.

Maggie Rich won twice in singles.

Douglas is now 9-1.
