Program of autumn jazz set Tuesday

Mile High Jazz Band will present a program of big band music titled Autumn Jazz at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Comma Coffee, 312 S. Carson St.

The performance is part of World Music Days, an annual global event affirming the ideals of tolerance, friendship, and shared humanity, inspired by the life and work of journalist and musician Daniel Pearl.

United Blood Services needs blood donations

United Blood Services of Reno requires about 125 blood donors daily to meet its community’s blood transfusion needs, and it’s asking for help to meet the demand.

Through October, all blood donors will qualified to win a $500 gift card with one $500 gift card drawing for mobile donors and one for Community Donation Center donors. All blood donors will receive a free cholesterol test and points in UBS’ Hero in Me donor loyalty program.

Photographers called to celebrate statehood

The Carson City Symphony Association needs photos of scenics, nature, Las Vegas, Cathedral Gorge State Park, the Emigrant Trail, Native Americans, Virginia City and mining for its A Nevada 150 Concert on Oct. 26 at the Carson City Community Center.

Rights of all photos remain with the photographers.

Submitting photos allows the one-time use of the images at the event. The photographer’s name will be projected along with each photo used.

The submission deadline is 11:59 p.m. Oct. 11. Photographers whose photos are used will receive two free tickets to the Nevada 150 signature event.

Carson hosts national anti-bullying group

The Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Nevada is hosting a presentation by Teach Anti Bullying, Inc. titled Bullying: The Silent Killer from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday.

Teach Anti Bullying, Inc. is a Philadelphia-based organization that raises awareness of bullying and supports families and children who are impacted by bully-related issues.

The event is sponsored by the Carson City Sheriff’s Association, Northern Nevada Law Enforcement Association, The Sausage Factory, J&M Furniture and the Carson City Firemen’s Association.

Trunk shows help charity for women

Kaia FIT is hosting Lululemon athletic trunk shows from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 10 at 2231 Meridian Blvd. in Minden, and from 7 to 10 a.m. Oct. 11 at 3633 Research Way in Carson City.

Each event offers a free workout, childcare and giveaways from Whole Foods and Jamba Juice. Proceeds from the trunk show benefit Zawadisha, a group who provides micro-loans to impoverished women in Africa.

Annual Carson River cleanup planned

Kiwanis’ annual cleanup of the Carson River is planned for Oct. 11. Volunteers will meet at 8 a.m. in the BLM parking lot, 5665 Morgan Mill Road.

The event, which has grown to involve Carson City Parks and Recreation, BLM, Key Club, Carson River Wranglers and others, began 25 years ago when Kiwanis members picked up trash left by fishermen.

Growth of Carson topic of Oct. 15 event

Ronni Hannaman, executive director of the Carson City Chamber of Commerce, will talk about how Carson City has changed at Carson City Leisure Hour Club’s meeting on Oct. 15 in the Carson Nugget’s Capitol Ballroom.

Hannaman’s presentation will also cover changes Carson City is currently facing, including the construction of Interstate 580 and proposed changes to downtown.

The Leisure Hour Club, established in Sept., 1896, is Carson City’s oldest continuously operating social organization. It promotes knowledge on important issues, science, music and literature.

Pumpkin patch, fall activities planned

Good Shepherd Wesleyan Church, 1505 Railroad Drive, is hosting a pumpkin patch Oct. 17-31.

The event is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

Saturdays are family days with bounce houses, food, a bake sale and pumpkin carving and decorating activities.

Carson Chamber Singers plans two concerts

The Carson Chamber Singers, directed by Michael Langham, will kick off its 30th season with a pair of concerts in Carson City and Reno.

The first concert will be at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 17 at Trinity Episcopal Church, 200 island Ave. in Reno. The program will be repeated at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 18 at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 300 S. Division St. in Carson City.

The program includes “Sure on the Shining Night” by Morten Lauridsen; Dirait on from “Les Chansons des Roses” by Lauridsen; Regina Coeli, K. 108, by Mozart; Canite tuba by Palestrina; and the traditional American hymn tune “Hark, I Hear the Harps Eternal,” arranged by Alice Parker.

Tickets cost $10 for general admission; children 16 and younger are admitted free. Tickets are available at CCSymphony.com, Play Your Own Music in the Carson Mall or at the door. Carson City Symphony flex tickets are also accepted.

Contestants sought for state pageant

The Official Nevada U.S. Continental Pageant is looking for Ms. and Mrs. contestants to represent their city or county at the state pageant, which will be held in March in Las Vegas.

The program recognizes women for accomplishments at home, work and in the community. Areas of competition include fitness in aerobic wear, private interview and evening gown wear.

Ms. Nevada applicants must be 18 and over and can be single, married, divorced or widowed. Mrs. Nevada applicants must be 18 and over and married. Pageant experience is not necessary.
