Prep roundup: Carson girls runners take significant step

The Carson High girls cross country team looks to be making a late season run toward a state berth based on its performance at the Reed Invitational, which featured all of Northern Nevada’s teams on Friday.

Carson finished fourth in the meet with 120 points behind Douglas (46), McQueen (70) and Galena (100). The top three teams from the North advanced to the State Championships and the Senators finished about 20 seconds as a team behind third place Galena on Friday.

The Senators were led again by Eveline Delgado, who covered the 3.1-mile course in 20 minutes, 35 seconds to take second. Lindsey Adams led Douglas to its first place finish by winning the individual title in 19:35.

Earlier in the season, Carson stood ninth in the Northern Nevada standings. Another encouraging factor about Carson’s effort on Friday was it was missing one of its top runners in Athena Favero, who had a family commitment. Freshman Rheanna Jackson was Carson’s second best runner, finishing 23rd in 23:01.

Carson’s boys also had a solid effort, finishing seventh with 161 points behind McQueen (41), Douglas (74), Galena (84), Reed (92), Reno (125) and Spanish Springs (145). Ian Van Renseelaer took 11th in 18:04 to lead the Senator boys. Wyatt Cartier was Carson’s second fastest runner, finishing in 34th in 19:09.

Carson’s junior varsity boys had an excellent finish, taking second. Miles Bean took fourth in 19:31, Joshua Marriner was fifth in 19:51 and Shane Morton was 13th in 20:18.

Carson’s JV girls, who stood in eight in Northern Nevada earlier in the year, moved up to fourth on Friday.

In her first race in two years and after recoving from shin splints, Blanca Sosa took ninth for Carson in 25:31.

Dayton 3, Fernley 0

Dayton (4-4 in the league) used a strong serving effort to roll to a 25-17, 25-19, 25-21 win. Kayley Turner had five aces, five kills and one blocks, Cheyanne Strong had four aces, nine kills and three digs, Shalia Powell had three aces, one dig and 25 assists, Rachel Hadley had nine kills and three digs, Elvia Diaz had five digs and Kallie Strong had one ace, one kill and one dig for the Dust Devils.
