RENO — A two-play, 69-yard touchdown drive in the final 27 seconds before halftime was the difference Saturday as Bishop Manogue pulled out an 18-13 Sierra League football victory against Douglas.
Zack Teats caught back-to-back passes from freshman quarterback Connor Noland, covering 47 yards and then 22 yards for a touchdown with 12.7 seconds left in the second quarter to give Manogue some breathing room in its homecoming game at D.J. Bernardis Field.
The win gave Manogue (1-5) its first win under coach Thomas Peregrin and moved the Miners to 1-0 in league. Douglas (1-5, 0-1) absorbed its fifth straight loss.
Douglas took a 7-0 lead at the end of the first quarter when outside linebacker Kaleb Foster made a bobbling interception and returned the ball 87 yards for a touchdown.
The Tigers were unable to maintain any momentum on offense, however, on a day when they turned the ball over five times. They gave up two interceptions in Manogue territory in the first half, then gave up a fumble and interception on back-to-back possessions in the third quarter, and fumbled the ball away in Manogue territory in the fourth quarter.
The game’s turning point came in the opening minute of the second quarter after Ian DeValliere kicked a 25-yard field goal. A fumble on the ensuing kickoff caromed into the end zone and resulted in a safety as Manogue rallied to within 7-5 on the scoreboard.
DeValliere kicked two more field goals, a 29-yarder late in the second quarter to make it 8-7 and a 29-yarder midway through the third quarter to extend the Miners’ lead to 18-7.
Douglas drove 78 yards in 11 plays, capped by Nick Abreu’s 7-yard touchdown run with 26.6 seconds remaining to make it 18-13. The Miners recovered the ensuing onside kick attempt to seal the win.
Noland completed 15 of 31 passes for 267 yards, 201 of which came in the first half. The Miners had two other first-quarter touchdown passes waved off due to penalties.
Cale Kynett rushed for 66 yards on 18 carries to lead Douglas offensively.
