Prep Roundup: Carson’s Delgado takes 26th at Clovis

FRESNO — Eveline Delgado finished a respectable 26th place to lead Carson High’s girls cross country team to a 17th-place finish in the Division II race at the Clovis Invitational Saturday at Woodward Park.

Shelby Brown ran 20:25.27 good for 76th place and Rheanna Jackson, a freshman, was 94th in 20:56.81. Jiovanna Wong-Fortunato was 119th in in 21:47.94 and Allison Green was 132nd in 22:14.36. Athena Favero ran a 22:19.10 for 134th and Tiffany DeRosa was 158th in 23:35.

“Both Athena and Eveline were sick,” Carson coach Pete Sinnott said. “In fact, I told Athena in the morning that she didn’t have to run. We had a few PRs today.”

The news wasn’t good for the boys, however. Carson was 29th out of 30 schools.

Ian Van Rensselaer led Carson, finishing 53rd in 16:43.46. Wyatt Cartier was 157th in 17:58.73, Michael Leiken was 172nd in 18:11.69, Ethan Lopes was 173rd in 18:12.30 and Miles Bean was 177th in 18:19.14. Kiefer Catron was 179th in 18:20.72 and Konnor VanWorth was 180th in 18:20.86.

“Ian got tripped and still ran under 17 minutes,” Sinnott said.

Dayton’s Stricker, Heusser run well

WINNEMUCCA — Sydney Stricker finished 11th in 22:24 at Friday’s Lowry Invitational at the Winnemucca Golf Course.

Stricker was 14th until the last half-mile when she passed three runners.

Brady Heusser continues to impress, finishing 15th with a time of 18:38, a pace of 5:49 per mile. Rounding out Dayton’s top five were J.J. Ply in 31st place (19:56), Oakley Workman in 32nd place (20:00), Nick Langstaff in 37th place (20:26) and Jared Logan in 39th place (20:46).

“If Sydney and Brady can continue running how they did today, they have a realistic chance of qualifying for state,” said Dayton coach Shawn Anderson.

• The Sierra Lutheran JV cross country team had three runners in the top 10 to win the boys title, and the varsity girls also won the team title.

Sophomore Ricky McNeely completed the 3.1 mile course in a winning time of 19:10, followed closely by sixth-place Steven Flanagan at 20:00 and ninth-place Tyler Waite at 20:20. On the girls’ side, the Falcons displayed a impressive finish with sophomores Elaina Marchegger and Clare Davison battling it out in the final 400 meters to take first and second place at 23:03 and 23:08 respectively. Following closely behind in sixth place was Camille Cassidy and Jee Benton in ninth place.

Hannah Martinez was 11th and Emma Herron 15th and Heather Kubel 20th to complete the points.

VOLLEYBALL

Yerington spikers roll

YERINGTON — Ashley Rife had 12 assists, five aces, eight digs, two kills and a block to lead Yerington to a 25-13, 25-7 and 25-18 victory over West Wendover on Saturday.

Jordan Bobrick had 10 digs and Deseree Lands had eight digs. Brianna Ramirez finished with five digs and two kills. Kassidy Lommori had 10 kills, eight digs, two blocks, an ace and assist.

Rachel Dane had six aces and five assists. The team played again without the injured Chloe Dane.

Virginia City tops Excel

VIRGINIA CITY — Nicole Huffman had 14 assists, eight aces and seven kills to lead the Muckers to a 25-10, 25-3 and 25-12 win over Excel Christian on Saturday.

Virginia City is 9-1 in league and 17-3 overall.

Niki D’Agostino had eight kills, five digs and 10 aces, while Bethany Fuller contributed five aces, three kills and two digs.Gwyn Landaburu and Jordan Seddon had three kills apiece.
