Prep roundup: Dayton rolls past Vikings

SOUTH TAHOE — The Dayton volleyball team picked up a crucial victory on the road Tuesday night — and did so in convincing fashion.

The Dust Devils swept South Tahoe 25-19, 25-23, 25-23, to move into a tie with the Vikings for fourth place in the league standings.

“This is big — they beat us the first time around, so we’ve been trying to come back around,” Dayton head coach Mike Edmiston said. “We wanted to get this one so we could hold our position and get rid of that back and forth we’ve had with South Tahoe in the first part of the season.”

Dayton (17-8, 6-5 Northern 1A) finished strong in each set of the victory — the Dust Devils scored the last seven points of the first set and broke a 23-23 tie in the second frame with two straight points. In the third set, a kill from middle blocker Kaylee Turner secured the sweep and allowed Dayton to avenge an earlier loss to South Tahoe (14-12, 6-5).

“It’s something my girls have been struggling with a little bit — coming on at the end,” Edmiston said. “Tonight they were on it no matter what — we found ways to get out of the bad rotations quickly and cleanly.”

Outside hitter Cheyanne Strong led the Dust Devils with a match-high 13 kills to go along with eight digs, two aces and a block. Turner finished with five kills, a block and a dig and setter Shalia Powell totaled 19 assists, eight digs, three blocks and two kills.

Defensively for Dayton, libero Elvia Diaz led the way with 12 digs and outside hitter Rachel Hadley had 10 digs and an ace. In the middle, Makenna Olsen had a block and a kill and Kassie Strong added a block.

“If we finish out the season the way we’ve been playing, we should be in good shape for regionals,” Edmiston said.

Muckers sweep Pyramid

VIRGINIA CITY — Nicole Huffman had 18 assists, nine kills and four digs to lead Virginia City to a 26-24, 25-5, 25-11 Division IV volleyball win on Monday.

Niki D’Agostino had seven aces, nine kills, five blocks and eight digs, and Bethany Fuller had nine kills and eight digs, and Kim Tiapa had nine and five digs.

Gwyn Landaburu had three kills, three assists and five digs.

GOLF

Krupp shoots 95 at regionals

SPARKS — Carson High’s Taylor Krupp shot a first-round 95 which puts her in 15th place after the first round of the NIAA Division I girls golf tournament at Red Hawk on Tuesday.

Three of her teammates — Bethany Kniffen, Camryn Aten and Angelika Liwag — failed to complete their opening rounds on Thursday. They will finish their first round at 10:30 a.m. Thursday with second-round action starting at 11:30.

Spanish Springs (323), Manogue (336), McQueen (338) and Galena (393) finished their rounds.

Spanish Springs’ Katrina Prendergast leads the way with a 76, three ahead of teammate Jada McAllister and McQueen’s Alice Duan. Douglas’ Koko Terada shot a 91.

TENNIS

Carson boys open strong

RENO — Carson High tennis players enjoyed success on the first day of the Division I boys singles and doubles tournament at Bishop Manogue High School and Caughlin Athletic Club.

In doubles, fourth-seeded Kyle Kunz and Aaron Woodbury won their opening match 6-1 and 6-2 against their Reed opponents. Jared Hearn and Trevor Solberger won 6-2 and 6-1 against a team from Wooster. Both Carson doubles team move on to the second round on Friday at 10:30 a.m. Nico Salm and Jon Artz lost to a Reed twosome, 6-3 and 6-4.

In singles play, eighth-seeded Jake Jones won 6-1 and 6-2. Teammate Taylor Saarem, the No. 10 seed, won his opener 6-2 and 6-1. The CHS duo advances to second-round play at 10:30 a.m. on Friday. The only first-round singles casualty was Tyler Warren, who lost 6-1, 1-6, 6-0.

The second round and quarters will be Friday with semis and finals on Saturday.

The girls start their tournament today in Reno.

Carson hosts Damonte tonight

Carson High’s boys soccer team looks to avenge an early season road loss when it hosts Damonte Ranch tonight at 7.

Carson lost 2-1 to the Mustangs back on Sept. 27. The Senators are 6-3-1 after demolishing Douglas 8-1 on Saturday.
